This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I am a little leery of using poisons on the pasture, but I figure, if you're spraying only the weeds they don't eat anyway, and it's rained real good in between, they should be OK.
Yeah, I thought that too.
Becky
I thought of that too:), but weeds is all I have right now, and Harley's been eating out there, sooooo, I'll play it safe and keep him off of it for the proscribed period of time.

Well, you know I'm a barefoot skeptic 'cept for maybe Cyn... But I hope she's been doing the regimen and getting the trims like she should. I think her Arab, and the young QH that has never been shod, did pretty well from the beginning.
Kat though is a QH with feet that are on the small side, she's in her upper teens, was a show horse, now does pretty heavy duty trail with Tiff (Tiff never goes on easy trails, she likes to make her own) and she's not a horse I would have put through this transition.
I firmly believe that if horses never are shoed you have a better chance of keeping them barefoot. Once they have been shod, then it gets real iffy. Okie had never been shod when I got him and he went down the trails here with all the rocks with no problem. His hoofs were very short, no doubt, when Cindy took him home, but he had still never took a gimpy step. I was amazed how well he did.
Celia had another horse that she rode from years that had never been shod. Then she took him on a very very hard 60 mile ride, and he got pretty sore. she wanted to compete again on him 2 weeks after that so she had him shod. When those shoes came off it took her over 2 years to get him toughened up to go barefoot again. Now it might have happened quicker if she had been trimming him the NB way, I don't know. But I think she would have been better off, letting his sore feet heal rather then have him shod.

Pretty cat:)
I've been out mowing in the pasture again.

Can this pony trot!
Bay - I wonder what that pony would do if I bit her in the butt... :~D
If ponies could fly :~D
The others too, got their blood pumping a little, which is what we wanted.
Did you buy new towels to match the cat? :)
In the field of field gadgets, I got one of these things on closeout ($90 marked down to $30).
This is one big handful of gadget, but it has one very important feature: a compartment for a disposable butane lighter.
Having multiple sources of fire is important in a survival situation, and one of the best is the cheap butane lighter. Buy a bunch, and stash them in different items of your gear.
You wouldn't believe how many cats we've looked at trying to find one that didn't clash ;~D
Pretty fancy gadget :~D
That was their economy model. They had one with an electronic compass/altimeter/barometer/thermometer/etc. built in where the mirror is on this thing. It was about $300 more.
Schrade knives has gone out of business. They made some good products, so there may be closeouts out there, like with this gadget.
The only problem with me is, I never know which direction camp is, and we can't leave the trail, so knowing which way is north doesn't really tell me much. :~D
Just have to follow the trail. ~shrugs~
Don't forget your camera:')
After work, I am going to pick up my new truck. It is out of town a ways, so I will not be on tomorrow morning early.
You all have a great weekend.
Thank God ya'll are ok. That one was waaaay too close for comfort. You are absolutely right about double wides being tornado targets. I don't know why the tornadoes always go after them first, but they do.
As bad as the drought has been I thought for sure this was going to be a dull spring, like last year. Boy, was I wrong.
The Jarrell tornado pulled the pavement up off the roads. Amazing.
"Make that 3 of us that would like to be storm chasers."
Dang, count me in!! There are several good sites on the internet where you can watch tornado videos from chasers. You can find them on a google search.
We lived in an old single wide that I got stuck in during a tornado and it got totaled because of roof damage about a year later from a hurricane. Guess what we did with the insurance money? Uh huh. A down payment on a double wide. I felt safer!:')
Beautiful pictures. I especially like the one of the pony running:)
