The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I wouldn't make you drive 2 hours:). I didn't realize it was an hour to Seattle. I'm sorry, I don't want to be too much trouble:)

Really looking forward to getting there, NOT looking forward to the flying, especially the change in planes in Col. Mack said just get off the plane and ASK.

Speaking of pictures, or the lack thereof, I found this one and thought it conveyed pretty well what happens to me sometimes when I REALLY want to get a picture of something...

Your pictures isn't showing up here. What's different, I've never had trouble before seeing your pictures.

Asking is always good, and airports are really well designed to move people who don't know where they are and aren't sure where they're going, so I bet you'll find your way just fine :~D

No trouble on the drive to get you :~D - That's just what we do to go to the airport :~D Very normal.

OK. Well the price of the tickets settled for me how long I'd stay. Trying to hit the cheapest days, I'd either only get to stay 2 full day, or I have to stay that long. I don't want to wear out my welcome, so I hope that works for you???

It works just fine :~D That way we get a nice full visit. I'd hate to be too rushed, we wouldn't be able to do everything we should do.

I don't want to overplan it, but I'm thinking we should ride at most every ~other~ day, just so we don't wear out the horses, can still see all the trails, and also take you to some touristy things like Mt. St. Helens, or the Ocean on in-between days, or just hang out and talk too.

Think you'll want to ride one day here at home in the pasture to get to know the horse, or go right out? My mind races trying to imagine and make plans... Though I know none of this really needs to be decided right now :~D I just get excited. :~D

Oh, I get very excited too:).

Mt. St. Helens, is the only thing I know of that is there that I really want to see. I've seen the ocean, Ca. anyway. I'll do anything you think I need too:). As far as practicing on the horse, if it makes you more comfortable for me to ride at home first that is fine. If she is as good as you say, and I'm sure she is, I don't think I'd have problems. I've climbed on a lot of strange horses here.

Every other day is fine with me otherwise for riding, or less even, I don't want to wear anyone's horses out, not too bad anyway:) And I don't mind just hanging around on off days visiting.

It's more just taking a trip, and meeting you guys, this will really be stepping out of my comfort zone, and there is a lot of excitment just doing that:) It's not ALL about the riding:) I doesn't take a lot to entertain me:)

We can't be goin' all the time or we'd wear ~us~ out, right? :~D

You won't have trouble with the horse, she's gold in temperament. Only thing that worries me is Tiffney's still got all her horses barefoot... I'd still pay to shoe her if Tiff would let me. She says they're all doing just fine but I know she was ouchy on rocky rip-rap roads last time I rode with her. That's OK if she's otherwise sound, we won't be on much rock.

We don't yet know how much time ecurbh'll be able to take off work, but it might work out just fine for us gals to go a time or two by ourselves, and then he'll join us on the weekend. :~D

Works for me:) I was wondering about ecurbh.....

I've also been wondering....isn't your trailer for 2 horses???

Hey if we need to shoe that horse, I'll sure help out in that area. I don't mind at all. I sure don't want to send a gimpy horse back to someone who is kind enough to loan her to me a stranger.

I'd pay it as a favor! The trouble is she's been trying to condition them to stay barefoot for the past three years.... she's one of those barefoot trim people, and it would probably set her back in that process to do it.

She takes this horse everywhere barefoot... and she'll have been riding all summer, probably more than we do. I'll offer again if she's at any risk of slowing us down.

Yeah :~D Logistics problem, but not a HUGE one. What I've figured is on days when all three of us are going, we'll take Bay and Cyn up, leave me or ecurbh there with the two, and come back and get you and Kat. Or vice-versa... It's only seven miles to the trail. Just a bit of ferrying back and forth.

O dear. Well 7 miles isn't too bad to have to make 2 trips.

Like I said, and I meant it, it's not ALL about the riding. We'll just play it by ear, and keep it as simple as we can, no stress:)

Well now, that is interesting, that she has been doing the barefoot thing for "3" years....From everything I've read it takes 1 year to get them sound on any thing.....this puts a different light on that, if the horse still gets ouchy at times.

I think this will be the third year with no shoes. I didn't notice any issues with her on dirt trail... what I noticed was on the logging roads we were on, if they were the rough kind of rip rap, she ducked along on the sides of them. And this was last year, too. She might be better now.

...Hey does anyone know if you spray for weeds with 24D, how long do you have to keep the horses off it?...

Hey, I found this site...

http://www.rcre.rutgers.edu/pubs/publication.asp?pid=FS446

There's a .PDF there and it says that for horses and cows that the interval between application and grazing for 2, 4-D was 7 to 14 days and to check the label.

It's not far to the forest at all, only hassle is the separating, and I figure, if we're really bored waiting at one end or the other, we could saddle horses. :~D

You gotta keep in mind that the trim has to be right for that to work.

Hey, thanks for the info. I thru the bottles away. I sprayed some on Rocky's side, but don't remember how long I kept him off. Must have been long enough. Charlie is the one today that told me there was a waiting time. Yikes! Once more the old adage that God protects the ignorant comes true.
