Heh...
It's prolly just trash :~D
First thing I would check is how heavy it is. You could do that by just pushing it with your foot. And see if it rattles.
Becky
I'll go push it and then come back and report it's estimated weight... you know.. just to build the suspense.
Why the duck tape then?
But I agree that that's all it is.
But even tho it's trash, there was something in there someone didn't want out. Maybe an animal they weren't sure was dead???
Becky
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
Becky
It would. But I'm also thinking that if they really wanted to hide it, they would have buried it. But then again these seem to be wierd people who bury empty oil barrels. It's a pity that I'm going to be away from my computer soon and I won't be back til 9! Bummer! I'm really curious.
I went out and kicked it... it's NOT heavy.
aww darn. How disappointing. Does it feel like there's anything in it?
Heh... I knew you'd be disappointed. It felt like whatever's might be in it is not much heavier than the can.
Which still makes it rather curious why they taped it shut.
HHMMMMMMMM,,did it rattle?
IF there had been something heavy, and it's been there awhile, a lot of it would have rotted away. Even taped it's not going to be vacum sealed.
So just go open it:)
Becky
LOL:)
More then likely...
I'll go get my horse saddled then come back and see what you've found,
Becky
We eventually figured out that it had been a sort of farm-garage-junkyard. My two semesters of archaeology helped!
Most of the junk was clustered around the remains of a building that had collapsed into the ground. It was not visible on the surface - leaves and compost had buried it completely. The layer of shingles (the top layer) was six inches underground.
We found most of an old Ford truck (except for the motor and transmission) inside, including all four fenders, the windshield, and the tires.
Not to mention rolls of barbed wire, chunks of unidentifiable metal (galvanized roofing?), remains of rusty tools, old oil cans, etc. etc. etc.
It was a five-trips-to-the-dump with a Ford 250 job. (I wonder how the truck felt hauling the remains of its ancestor.)
The only other time I've ever heard about somebody doing something like that to a garbage can was when they were getting their pool ready for winter and they sealed up a couple of plastic garbage cans like that to float up under the pool cover to try to keep the water from collecting on top of the cover. Other than that, I have no clue. It's still strange how it ended up where it is though.
Well in reality it probably wasn't a body or a load of cash anyway. But it was fun to imagine. :-) But as far as it being taped shut, you also have to remember that they buried an empty oil drum. To me, that seems to be a bigger puzzle.
First... dogs were sent in to sniff at it...
Next, the can was stood upright and the tape seal was cut.
With shaky anticipation, the lid of the can, the subject of occasional wild speculation for over 5 years... was lifted and it's contents finally revealed...

TA DA! TAPED TRASH CAN CONTENTS REVEALED!
Heh...
But... Never fear, mystery fans!
There is...
Another...
{cue brass section} DUMP DUM DAH!
Hahaha Hair, that's a great post! :-D
Is there another one out there? These were some seriously strange people living there before you :)
They trashed the rest of the property, but they tended and mowed and cared about this place.
