The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

First thing I would check is how heavy it is. You could do that by just pushing it with your foot. And see if it rattles.

I'll go push it and then come back and report it's estimated weight... you know.. just to build the suspense.

Why the duck tape then?

But I agree that that's all it is.

But even tho it's trash, there was something in there someone didn't want out. Maybe an animal they weren't sure was dead???

It would. But I'm also thinking that if they really wanted to hide it, they would have buried it. But then again these seem to be wierd people who bury empty oil barrels. It's a pity that I'm going to be away from my computer soon and I won't be back til 9! Bummer! I'm really curious.

Heh... I knew you'd be disappointed. It felt like whatever's might be in it is not much heavier than the can.

Which still makes it rather curious why they taped it shut.

HHMMMMMMMM,,did it rattle?

IF there had been something heavy, and it's been there awhile, a lot of it would have rotted away. Even taped it's not going to be vacum sealed.

So just go open it:)

As soon as ecurbh leaves for work (trying to get him to work on time) I'll go open it.... {cue suspenseful music}

This may be the most anticlimactic mystery since Geraldo Rivera opened Al Capone's vault.

We found some pretty amazing stuff when we bought our land to build our first house.

We eventually figured out that it had been a sort of farm-garage-junkyard. My two semesters of archaeology helped!

Most of the junk was clustered around the remains of a building that had collapsed into the ground. It was not visible on the surface - leaves and compost had buried it completely. The layer of shingles (the top layer) was six inches underground.

We found most of an old Ford truck (except for the motor and transmission) inside, including all four fenders, the windshield, and the tires.

Not to mention rolls of barbed wire, chunks of unidentifiable metal (galvanized roofing?), remains of rusty tools, old oil cans, etc. etc. etc.

It was a five-trips-to-the-dump with a Ford 250 job. (I wonder how the truck felt hauling the remains of its ancestor.)

The only other time I've ever heard about somebody doing something like that to a garbage can was when they were getting their pool ready for winter and they sealed up a couple of plastic garbage cans like that to float up under the pool cover to try to keep the water from collecting on top of the cover. Other than that, I have no clue. It's still strange how it ended up where it is though.

Well in reality it probably wasn't a body or a load of cash anyway. But it was fun to imagine. :-) But as far as it being taped shut, you also have to remember that they buried an empty oil drum. To me, that seems to be a bigger puzzle.

REPORT
RE: the mystery of the taped trash can in my woods.

First... dogs were sent in to sniff at it...

Next, the can was stood upright and the tape seal was cut.

With shaky anticipation, the lid of the can, the subject of occasional wild speculation for over 5 years... was lifted and it's contents finally revealed...

Posting this as a link only.... to protect sensitive viewers from this potentially graphic content...
TA DA! TAPED TRASH CAN CONTENTS REVEALED!

Heh...

But... Never fear, mystery fans!

There is...

Another...

{cue brass section} DUMP DUM DAH!

Checked in as soon as I got to work :) Thank goodness no dead body (unless it's hidden in there with the coke can and mayo jar)

Is there another one out there? These were some seriously strange people living there before you :)

Maybe everyone's junk is rather interesting when it's abandoned and converted to an archaology study :~D This place has an old collapsed shed way off in a corner... something a neighbor called 'the chicken house'. While I also took many loads of crap to the dump, since then, I've mostly turned that old heap into the property garbage pile when we find new stuff. Lots of metal and car parts, and some wire... lots of beer bottles and old cans. The [other] really weird thing about this place was, as poorly cared for as the rest of the property was... There was a neat little path back to this place... where there was a fire pit.

They trashed the rest of the property, but they tended and mowed and cared about this place.
