The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Describe flares? Another farrier told me that my horses hooves were too long. They all seem to think different though.

She. Actually it was an exercise. I was working with her on something that she has problems with and I walked by the cones and hoops. She's so funny about her ears. I put one on and she just stood there so I put the other on. No reaction. I thought I would just she what she did when they fell off. I have to do exercises with them so...Anyway, after about 15 minutes it was obvious she wasn't gonna drop them.

Flares are going to be hard to explain, especially since it looks like your horses foot isn't flaring:). I looked for a picture but couldn't find a good one.

If you take and cover the bottom 2/3 of your horses hoof with your hand. From the hair line (coronet band), down the first 1/3 of the hoof, notice the angle. Then uncover the bottom 2/3 the angle will change and flare out. A foot without flaring will have the same angle all the way down the hoof wall.

From my understanding, and my understanding could be very iffy:), I'm just learning all this stuff too, A flat shoe, puts pressure on the hoof wall with each step and over time will cause the hoof wall to pull away for the bone inside the foot, flare it out. With the beveled shoe you relieve that pressure. In the wild a barefoot horses hoof will wear more rolled like a beveled shoe, rather then flat like a flat shoe. When the hoof wall pulls away from the bone the bone drops down and is closer to the ground making them more sensitive.

In the wild a horses foot wears also more squared off in the front then what a regular shoe is shaped like. A regular shoe changes the breakover of the foot and that can cause problems in legs, joints, back.

That's how I understand it:)

So when's your first trail ride?

What was discussed at a trail riding meeting?

What a beautiful face on that mare. I don't know, I think she's a medicine hat but I'm not an authority on paints.

I wouldn't be able to stand not knowing what's in it :) I also wouldn't open it myself.
