New thread here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1651860/posts |

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Thanks:)

Well - any news???? :~D
My shoer has come and gone. I don't know if I'm gonna bother taking pictures of their feet all newly trimmed to post to that farrier board or not. I trust my farrier. Not sure why I wanted all of them to bless the work :~D
Bay feels great. He bolted off running when I turned him back out.
My farrier had his apprentice with him, a guy who is evidently also giving training and lessons, while wanting to learn shoeing. He's been here once before too. I let him trim the pony. Mark did Cyn and Bay in the time it took him to trim the pony ;~D
I didn't mind letting him practice on the pony at all. She's easy, her feet are simple, and it probably doesn't matter a whole lot what kind of trim she gets. I appreciate that Mark didn't even ask if the apprentice could do Cyn, or Bay, certainly. He knows whose feet really matter.
Got to talking with the apprentice though, about ecurbh and I going up to the arena and taking lessons from him this month. I discussed ecurbh's experience so far, and that maybe now is a good time for him to learn some advanced kind of riding and that it doesn't have to come from me, probably better if it doesn't. I said "He just wants to ride well and ride trail. Doesn't need show stuff, doesn't need to learn the perfect western pleasure jog trot, just good solid riding." The trainer knew what I meant. What do you think hon? He trains at Trails End. Maybe go up there some evenings? I'll go too and tool around the arena on Bay while he works with you and Cyn. Interested? Or you like winging it?
OOO, you should do it at least once, so we can see pictures of a lesson in progress. I'd also be interested in seeing WHAT he started with and taught with the critiera you set. Very interesting:)
Well everything with Jenny has faded away:(. She took a nap. and now nothing.
I still don't think it will be more then a day or so till he gets here. I'm going to run down and see her for a few minutes before AI starts. Yes, I'm an AI fan...LOL, it's a fun show.
Becky
Oh, did you broach any of the things you were told on the farrier thread with your farrier?
Becky
No. I didn't. I was half tempted to bring him in and show him the whole thread. And half hoping he doesn't read the internet and find out I posted it. I asked him if he thought Bay's feet would be ouchy if we took the pads off, she said - no - I don't think so - he's still got good hard sole there, and poked it. He had a good strong healthy looking frog. I asked if he should keep them on, he said "Sure - he probably feels better with them on". I can't say I think they hurt anything.
What ~I~ think he should start with are excercises that get ecurbh using his leg more... He doesn't use much leg, and Cyn's not particularly good at leg yielding anyway, I suspect... but it comes up a lot on trail that you need to pivot in place or sidepass, or even just use leg to keep them from avoiding a mud puddle in the middle of the trail or keep them where you want. Right now, ecurbh mostly just reins, which leaves Cyn able to go around certain things she doesn't like, like mud. So - some of those obstacles like poles he has to sidepass or back through... that kind of stuff.
And get comfortable cantering and circling and faster stuff... Following me on trail, he hasn't done a lot of that.
Had a false alarm, eh? Sounds like it's going to be soon, though.
Guess who's home! Yuppers, Tuffy is home and doing fine. He's a bit ouchy, seems fine just walking but is having trouble turning still. He's wearing a full taped on pad, which I have to take off and clean up every 2 or 3 days. No more strongid or oats, he's on a strict diet of just a little grass hay. He ain't gonna like it but it's doctors orders. Oh, and the farrier that I met on that farriers site came over! he called, was nearby and wanted to see Tuffy. We talked for 2 solid hours, he looked at Bud and Mina as well as Tuffy, and wouldn't accept any money. I told him no way was I going to let him leave without being paid for a consultation but he was adamant. He had his girlfriend with him and she was also shaking her head no, they would not accept money. Very nice people.
Did you learn anything from them that you can use?
Those are two ticks on his ear, aren't they? We don't see them that often. Don't 'spose there's anything I can do for him about it. What happens with ticks? Do they sit there a few days and fill up, then drop off again? Or are they gonna stay there? Are they putting him at risk or are they just sortof a drain on him?
No, not really. We had pretty much already talked about everything on the phone. We did know some of the same people. He was in the horse racing industry a while back and he knew the guy who is now my horse dentist, who used to be a race horse trainer.
He said the horse racing industry is a cutthroat, cheatin' business. Those people will do anything to win. From the outside looking in, it seems really glamourous. Guess not.
That squirrel is seriously cute but I wouldn't try to help it. Down here they can carry rabies.
Those ticks are just beggin' to be picked off, though.
Seems like you could reach up there and grab 'em ;~D
Rabies here is even rarer than ticks, but I don't think I'd have a chance in heck of ever catching him anyway... He likes me, but not ~that~ much :~D
They either fall off, or blow up:} If you see alot of blood some day, it blew up.
I don't know if ticks hurt squirrels or not. I know a dog can die if they get too many on them all at once, can make then anemic. I don't know if animals can get things like Rocky mountain fever, or other tick illnesses.
He's cute. I've had a few squirrels the last few days at my feeders. I like them as much as the birds.
Becky
Glad to hear Tuffy is home and doing better.
So he gets grass hay ONLY, and not much of that??? I'd have trouble following doctors orders:) Poor guy.
Becky
As far as grabbing them:), even if you could, they really don't come off all that easy. You'd either blow them up, or break the head. Yuk, I hate ticks. Nasty little buggers.
Becky
Interesting. I sure wish I got that channel. :~\
Two show stallions are arguing over who should take best of breed.
The first says, "I'll grant you are the closest I have ever seen to my equal, but my legs are just a bit straighter than yours, and, you know, the legs are of prime importance: no foot, no horse!"
The second horse says, "I'll allow your legs are just a bit better than mine, but mine are the legs I was born with and I know for a fact you had thousands of dollars of corrective work. Your foals will inherit your natural legs, not your genius farrier!"
The first horse mulls this for a moment, then says, "You're right. I stand corrected..."
baaaaaaaaad :~D
Glad to hear Tuffy is home and you got to meet the farrier. Sounds like things are looking up.
