The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Tiger food refers to a funny thing that happened to me a few years ago... I know I told the story before, but you must have missed it ;~D

I had a plumber here fixing something, and when he was done he walked out into the yard and we started chit-chatting about the horses. As part of that conversation he says "what do you do with the body when a horse dies? Do you or your friends ever have one die?"

Well, I gave him a rather quizzical look, and said "It can be a rather big ordeal, either have to call in a backhoe or a rendering truck" - "Why?"

"Well, I was wondering, because I could feed them to my cats"

Another quizzical look. "Wow - you must have a lot of cats!"

"Just two" he smiles... "Tigers".

"You have two tigers?"

"Yeah - I have two tigers, I usually feed them whole turkeys... about 15-20 a week. Sometimes I get roadkill deer or I buy a butchered cow or something from a dairy."

"Huh"

"But I was just wondering if you ever know anyone who has a horse die, well I'd love to have it."

"Huh - well, I never thought about feeding them to tigers before, but I guess it's a thought! Nothing really wrong with that once they're dead I guess! - It's no worse than a rendering truck."

"Yeah - I'll leave you my card, if you ever have it happen."

At this point I'm wondering if he always gives his number to people who have large pets that might die. I figure, when you own two tigers, your entire life is spent looking for meat.

But I asked a functional question. I said... "What if the horse is put down... due to illness or injury... with drugs? Would the drugs be a problem?"

"Yeah - I couldn't feed it if the horse was put down with drugs, would have to be a natural death, or a gunshot or something"

"I said, well, no horse here is going to be shot when his time has come. Unless he dies naturally in his sleep, they'll be put down with drugs."

"OK - well, if you have one die naturally"

At this point the guy seemed a little too eager for my horses to keel over, but I told him I'd keep it in mind!

Well, the part that makes this story really funny was that a few days later, a horse from down the street was loose on the road out front, and I grabbed some grain and a halter and lead and went to help catch the thing. Well, when it was running back and forth across the road, I kept thinking "Tiger food!"

It's a good story :~D And true!

I told it to my friend Bob, and he figures it's the same guy who had been written up in the paper a couple years ago when he moved to a new place and set up an acre sized pen for these cats. The neighbors were a little alarmed about it.

By all accounts the cats seemed fat and well taken care of.

LOL, Good story:)

I took a picture of Rocky this morning. Every spring I always thing the way he looks when he first sheds out is "different":) The black on his shoulders will change to gold later in the spring/summer.

He sure looks dark and rich now...

I bet it fades later because of the sun.... you think?

Other side

I don't know if it's that it fades, if that's it it's the prettiest fade job I've ever seen, because it gets very golden. I've often wondered what he'd look like if he was kept up in a stall. If he'd be more black then gold.

He looks magnificent with all that mane on that side :~D

He's dapply too, right now. My pony is really dappled when she first sheds out.

He pretty much stays dappled all summer. Rocky has a wonderful mane and tail, very strong hair, but not really coarse. Each stand is thick but silky. Very easy to brush out without pulling half of it out.

Harleys' mane and tail are very fragile:(. I don't think it will every be long unless I'd keep the tail in a bag, and I've been there done that and it's more trouble then it actually helps.

That's great. Bay has a great tail, but not such a great mane. I'd never bother with bagging them either, even when I was showing. I don't think it does a lot of good, and it just takes away their fly swatter. I just don't brush it often, only when it's wet and has conditioner in it.

His ultra black legs are what makes him really striking. They couldn't be blacker, could they?

They are very black, but I think it's so very noticeable because the black goes sooooo high up his leg. Most of the buckskins I've seen the black stays below the knees.

wildly overpriced.

The people on Agdirect do seem to have their horses priced high.
The gaited horses especially.

Becky, you could check in Paypal or another site. That way both seller and buyer are protected. You ship the saddle when she has the money in the account. She don't like it, and sends it back, you cancel the transaction.

...I don't want to ship it till I have the money, and I'm sure she doesn't want to send the money till it's shipped:). Anyone ever sell anything this way...

I sold my first Ortho Flex saddle years ago to a lady in WA. I shipped it COD and it worked out fine. But that was before PayPal. You might want to set up a PayPal account and let her pay you that way. I don't know all the particulars on how it works, but apparently they notify you when the money is in your account and you don't ship it until then. Granted, it'll cost you a percent of the sale, but it must be a fairly safe way of buying and selling stuff because so many people do it.

Try some Show Sheen. That stuff works wonders. It's a silicone spray makes the hair real slick and shiny and easy to brush. It doesn't seem to re-tangle either.

Hey! I thought I'd post you a few pics from the "Pony Rides" this weekend...

Me and TheBirthdayBoy on Tennessee...

It was a "Farm" themed party, so that's why I've got on the goofy hat and bandanna. I look like a porky Mennonite! Jeeeez!

I look a little better in this one, after I ditched the hat...

Tennessee was feeling kinda sassy for the first few minutes. It was pretty cold and windy and the Jack was braying like crazy out by the fence, but I think he looks pretty all bowed up like that...

I put the new saddle on after a while but I didn't ride in it very much so I still don't know how it's going to turn out. I did discover that I do need to tie the knot to that first D-ring though, otherwise the fender gets hung up on it.
