This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The weight on the UPS package is 40-something pounds, but that includes the front and back girths, a saddle cover and all the packing material.
Another cool thing I bought this weekend is another trail bridle. My riding buddy bought one from National Bridle and it was too small for his horses, but it fit Bob fine, so I bought it from him. It'll fit everybody else but Tennessee. I had to have one special made for him coz he's just big all over. It's real similar to the black nylon ones I already have, but it's got that black vinyl coating on it so it looks a lot like leather. It's got all solid brass hardware too, otherwise I wouldn't have it. It was a little pricey at $80, but that included the reins and tax. It's only one I've found that was nylon and had solid brass fittings, so it should last as long as I do. Hair, you might want to check into one of those if you get in the mood for a trail bridle again. It's very well made.
I would like one if I go back to riding Bay in a bit again... They've got some cool ones at the tack shop, gorgeous leather ones that are expensive. They have the nylon ones but the ones they have are always obnoxious colors :~0 - Maybe I could just order one in black.
But for the moment I'm looking forward to trying Bay in the hackamore on trail, and those don't work too well with a halter on. So I'll have to carry a halter still.
I've seen a couple of people here lately with a horse "collar" on when they go trail riding. They're like a 2" wide nylon collar that buckles on and they have rings in each side, so they're supposed to work real well for cross-tying when you want to work on their head, like for clipping and stuff. I'd thought about getting one, just for the barn, but they look like they work well for people who don't want to carry a halter when they trail ride too. You don't have to bother with taking the bridle off.
I've seen people put those on horses that are hard to get a halter on out in the pasture. It would work pretty well if you think tying them by the neck would be a good idea... I think it might give them just enough freedom to get in trouble.
I think it'd work pretty well, but you'd have to be sure to get it tight enough that it wouldn't come off over their head. I think that once they realized that they were tied just as securely with one of those, they wouldn't test it any more than they would with a halter. But it might be a good idea to tie them with it first at home, just so they get used to it.
I may. Are you going? It depends on whether or not I go to the cabin. Are you in the market for another horse?
I have a really nice saddle for sale but I didn't consign it in time. I may just put it on ebay. We paid $900 for it and husband used it two times and sold his horse !!!!

After I broke my ribs a few yrs.ago, I bought a vest for the cabin. It looks goofy but I don't care, anything could happen on those trails, and I NEVER want to go through that pain again. Plus I'm getting rather long in the tooth for broken ribs. lol
Not right now. The little Arabian will do just fine for me. I imagine we will be going up to look around. Catch up on all the goings on. You might try taking your saddle to the sale. You might be able to sell it.
Who knows how much you going to need for retirement. That is about knowing how long you will live. With the cost of everything going up, it's hard to tell.
The 4th of July is my Independence day too. I just haven't decided if this year or next. When we built our house we moved in on the 4th of July too.
*80 years. Wow. I'm "almost" afraid to mess with it.
My husband and I figure we can maintain the same life style on a lot less. That requires stop charging and pay off the bills though. T
I'm really thinking about it. I'm ordering this new toy tonight, (a low 2nd stirrup). I may add one on. Maybe. The one's in the catalog look light weight and comfortable. I figure if it's too hot I can just ride naked under it as long as I could keep from knocking myself out:')
Have you gotten a hackamore for Bay yet? (or did I miss something?) Everyone is buying horse goodies... it makes me want to get a horse. NOW. We were talking about it at the barn today, and my old trainer (who is my trainer's trainer) was asking me when I was going to jump back into horse ownership. I told her ASAP. I miss everything about it. Even mucking stalls.

I wish, because he's such a fantastic all around horse. He's an absolute bombproof trailhorse. But he's a keeper for my trainer once he gets finished.

This reminds me of something else I've been fretting about. I need a different bit for Harley. I'm just not happy with the ones I've got. But bits are as complicated as shoeing:).
I use to have a magazine that had pages of bits in it and how they worked and what they accomplished for you. I wish I could find it:)
