The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We are suppose to be in the 40's all week. After the 70's that we have been having that feels really cold, and very depressing since I was getting geared up to start planting this week. I'd say tho this will be the last of the really cold. Tomorrow night we are suppose to get to 29....I'm going to have to cover up the things that I did plant that have started to grow, or just start over after tomorrow night.

About the retirement (a little behind here). There are a lot of calculations concerning how much you need to retire on. My company, along with a lot of others, terminated the pension funds. We do have the options for a 401K, which I have been a participate for a number of years. If you want to maintain the current life style you are living while working, I imagine you would need a pretty good nest egg. True, it costs to go to work and you will save there. I plan on planting a garden again..lol

There have been too many funerals lately, that I have attended of friends of mine that died why too young. Just like you two, I want to enjoy my life. Hopefully, I am out of here in July.. ;')

No, I didn't want to risk them. I just put seeds out, morning glories, and some wildflower seeds. The weather got me so inspired and I have so many seeds, I figured what the heck, if they freeze I've got plenty to replace them, and if they don't I'm that much ahead of the game:). Now that they are growing tho, I don't want to lose them, altho they are all just barely coming up.

I've never planted things from seed like this except for morning glories. It's funny I'm not sure now what is seeds I've planted and what is weeds just starting:). In the past I scraped the weed seedlings out every morning. Now I know what one of the advantages of starting from seedlings:) you know whats flowers and what is weeds:)

Hey! My mother has a table and chairs just like that, although in quite a bit better shape. Hers is mahogany and I'll bet yours is too, under all that paint. The design in the back of the chairs is called a Lyre back and the style of the table and chairs is Duncan Phyffe. Mom got hers from an elderly neighbor back when she first married, about 60 years ago, so the table is probably at least 80 years old.

Clear and a little cold here... 29

It gets colder here in the spring just as the sun starts coming out, because it's colder without the cloud cover :~]

Well, I forgot the bag that the cameras were in, so no ride video's today. Some days I'd forget my head if it wasn't glued on. :~/

On the bright side. I'm expecting a UPS package today that'll have a saddle that I bought off ebay last weekend. Hopefully I didn't get screwed. ;o) If it works out ok, I'm going to cancel the order on the one I've been waiting on since Labor Day. I just got tired of waiting.

Here's a pic of the saddle that the girl e-mailed to me...

Hopefully it'll look this good when I get it. It's a brand I'd never heard of before, a Royal King Auto Adjust. The bars are supposedly attached to the pommel and cantle on a pivot point, something like my Orthoflex, and it's supposed to adapt the gullet from 5 to 9 inches. So it's supposed to fit most any shaped back. We'll see I guess. Tennessee is probably 1500# and Grace is lucky to weigh 900 soaking wet. My Orthoflex fits them both, so hopefully this one will too. This is the picture from their website that explains how it works...

Oh, how exciting:). I'm going to try to figure out how the e-bay thing works and get my English one on there. What kind of saddle was it that you bought? Any particular reason you are buying all these saddles, or do you just want them? I mean, are you having trouble with a particular horse and saddle fitting?

I checked the tracking number this morning and it's out for delivery, so hopefully this rain will stop by this afternoon and I can try it on a few backs this evening. Pics will follow tomorrow.

HHMMMMMMMMM, that is very interesting:)

Did she tell you how heavy it is? Looks like it could be heavier then your ortho-flex.

No problems, just more horses than saddles. My Orthoflex fits them all perfectly, but I didn't want to pay $2500 for a new one, so I took a chance on this one. It sounds very similar in the way that the tree is supposed to adapt to the shape of the back you put it on. Like I say, we'll see.

Supposed to be 27#, so not that bad. I don't know what my Orthoflex weighs, but it's probably close to that.

Hey, that's good, I thought it looked like it would weigh more then that.

I'll have to take it somewhere and have some D-rings and tie strings put on it coz if you'll notice, it has NONE. I can have those concho's replaced with the kind that have the little swiveling Ds underneath them like we were talking about some time back. I'll probably have a crupper D added too while I'm at it. I ride in some pretty steep places and have almost had my saddle slide off over the horse's head without one. Oh, and I'll probably have footman's loops put on the back of the cantle. Those are nice and rigid and are good for tying a cantle bag or a coat to.
