This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hey, and that doesn't mean he wouldn't make a good horse, Harley has interference problems:). I've had my shoer say Harley is short back, and the vet say he is long backed....so who knows if all these theories about confirmation mean anything or not:). The main thing I look for in a horse is will they kill me or not:).
Becky
Here's hoping you Texans get some rain soon. There is water laying in my pasture. Very flat, so not any run off to speak of.
Hair, that crazy kitten. We had a cat like that once, that loved water. So cute!
"The main thing I look for in a horse is will they kill me or not"
Amen to that!!
Hey tuffy:)
How's Tuffy doing?
We've got a 70% chance of rain all weekend up here. I hope we/you get some of it:).
Becky
We've got a 100% chance of rain right now :~D
Hope you get yours!
Good morning everyone!
He's doing ok. He seems to have good days and bad days. He's getting around with no pain meds, walks forward just fine but has trouble turning. Very short strided at the trot.
Supposed to rain all weekend here, too. Hope it does, we sure need it.
Look forward to your pics :~D
I still browse around at that farrier forum, and I think I know more, and less, about horse feet than I knew before :~D
Well, that goes both ways:')
Oops. I was going to say buy Blondie as a "sister" horse. She has 4 white stockings though:'( lol
Really:). I haven't been over there at all. Too confusing. I going to try to start learning stuff about shoeing/trimming, but I'm going to learn it from my farrier:). This is one of those things that for me, I have to trust someone, and I'd rather go with someone I know. I know several of the equine vets around here recommend Chris, my vet said the shoe job he did on Harley was good, and other then that one time last year, I've never had one lamed by him. I think he's a good farrier, but I do worry about it:), but I'd worry about any of them, since I don't know that much about it.
Becky
He still looks thin in his back hips, don't you think?
???
I'm not sure I understand:)
Becky
UUMMMMMM, I thought he was a bit thin, I thought the mare was too. Lactating mares and growing foals require a lot more feed then people realize. But once again pictures of horses can be deceiving. It's hard to get good pictures of horses.
Becky
Just a try it and you die conversation I occasionally have with mine.
LOL, and since we're picking the little guy to pieces anyway, in the line of pictures dated Sept. in 3 of them his back legs look like they could be cow hocked. In the last one where you're looking at his butt, look how close the insides of his legs are to brushing each other, then in the first one, altho it's hard to tell it's looks like that is happening again because the foot that is forward looks like it is coming down right in front of the other one. I don't know if that is a bad thing or not, but I know that in the books I've read being cow hocked is looked upon as a confirmation flaw.
Becky
Hope you don't mind. It's something we like doing around here. When a new horse picture that doesn't belong to anyone shows up here we study him/her. It's really interesting. Hair can even draw lines of reference on them.
It is... And some of it's asthetics... any horse can stand cow-hocked, and usually ~do~ right when you're trying to take their picture ;~D
Bay has the looosy-goosiest back legs I've ever seen. He consistently stands like a dork. But he's got no hind end trouble and has good movement and soundness in the back.
I think when evaluating and comparing horses we have to have these conformation ideals to look at, what else can we compare by? Some faults, like small feet or badly aligned knees, do lead to problems in hard work. Some don't. Some flaws, like ewe necks and head size, are really more asthetic than limiting.
Just more grist for the mill...
Lol, you need her for Sarah, she wanted a horse for christmas.
I want a 50 y/o for Sarah. I was thinking about you. You could stable here:')
