The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That toe crack looks like it should grow out, but it hasn't? Is it just recracking as new foot comes down?

Yeah, that toe crack just kept on running up the toe as the hoof grew out. It's been there for a year or so. Every time he got trimmed it it just never got cut back enough to get it all out. From what I've been told, you've got to get the crack pared out all the way up until you can't see any black stuff in the whole length of the crack. The black stuff is fungus and it keeps eating away at the cracked material and weakening it, causing the crack to continue to run. The iodine is supposed to keep the fungus out, plus you're supposed to keep it picked out. He said there was a small rock stuck up in the crack too. Hopefully this, along with keeping his toes shorter, will fix him up.

That is fancy. When I had the horses in Houston the farrier had a kind of u- haul trailer he had customized. Mine here just drives an old truck. Did you have trouble taking pictures?. Horse People around here act like they don't like that. They don't say no but act uncomfortable.

WoooHooooooo!

I live in Missouri, near St. Louis. The storms went all around us, but we never got it very bad - a little hail and a LOT of rain saturday night, distant thunder and a bit of lightning sunday night, but never anything REALLY bad...anyway we're o.k. so don't worry...:-b

Must be something new in the farrier circle. Most of the farriers around here have trucks with beds on them like that around here. My farrier had one, but when the truck broke down he mounted the bed on a trailer and now pulls it behind a truck.

Dot develops a crack in one of her toes if she gets over long.

The watch area is well to the north and west of us - just the NW corner of GA is under watch.

We live in a hole, which means we get pretty wet but the tornados usually skip over us. The big tornado that touched down at Windy Hill Rd. and U.S. 41 4-5 years ago went RIGHT over our house. We heard it roaring.

Atlanta is extremely hilly, which has saved us a couple of times. On flat ground the tornado can get down, stay down, and really gain momentum, but in places like Atlanta it skips and hops and winds up never really fastening on the ground. Usually around here roofs get pulled off and trees get topped, but you don't see bare floor slabs looking like they've been vacuumed . . .

Q: Why is a tornado in Georgia like a divorce in Tennessee?

A: No matter what happens, somebody's going to lose a trailer . . .

Glad to hear you made it through okay. I was looking at news pictures today of the damage and it is horrific in places.

No problem at all. I just whipped out the camera and said, "I'm gonna take your picture." LOL! I don't think he minded, but then I ain't the most perceptive person in the world when I get my mind on something.

Glad to hear y'all are ok. We dodged a bullet here too last night. I live in NW ALabama. The storms went south of us and I sure was glad.
