The Tamil language belongs to the Dravidian family of languages which is completely different from the Indo-European family.Almost nothing is known about its origins except that this language was at one time spoken all over India before the Aryans gained dominance of northern India. The Dravidian language family (Brahui language)probably originated in the Indus valley (modern day Pakistan). It is said that the Dravidian family of languages may be a distant relative of the Uralic family (the the only language family having the slightest similarity with the Dravidian languages).The Tamil language is oldest surviving language in this family.
