The pink girls "face their fear of heights"--that's about all I remember. They were repelling down the side of a skyscraper. One of the girls was in tears.

Wouldn't be fun if the AR used a movie --Something About Mary comes to mind--and the teams travel to all the cities mentioned in the movie. Estadio Olympica in Chile, Rhode Island, Miami, Nepal, might have to stretch to find enough places to race to, but wouldn't it be fun for those of us online chatting about the episode.

Episode 1: Denver, USA to São Paolo, Brazil

ERIC & JEREMY RIDE TO THE TOP; JOHN & SCOTT STALL

Phil signaled the beginning of THE AMAZING RACE in Denver, Colorado as the eleven Teams made their way to São Paolo, Brazil. With planes landing within minutes of each other, successfully navigating through the crowded city streets in taxis made all the difference. Most Teams opted for a soaring helicopter ride overlooking the expansive city, while some became frustrated building motorcycles. In the end, friends Eric & Jeremy nabbed first place, while lifelong friends John & Scott’s slow taxi contributed to their elimination.

READY, SET, GO!

The ninth installment of THE AMAZING RACE began in the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado as the eleven Teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, gathered at the starting line in the seats of the famed Red Rock Amphitheater. After host Phil Keoghan signaled the start of the Race, best friends BJ & Tyler took an early lead running to their backpacks waiting at the top of the amphitheater steps as the high altitude slowed some of the Teams considerably. Opening their clue, all eleven Teams excitedly learned they would be flying to São Paolo, Brazil on one of three flights. Once in São Paolo, they needed to find the Unique Hotel, where their next clue would be waiting on the rooftop.

FLIGHT PLAN

While the Teams jockeyed for position on the Colorado freeway, married parents Lake & Michelle thought they would get the upper hand by pulling over to reserve seats on the first American flight out--over the phone. However, they did not fully read their clue that explicitly forbids this action until after they wasted precious time on the phone. Back in the car, Lake, who made the suggestion to call, apologized, adding, “That was…partially my fault really.”

At the Denver Airport, childhood friends Danielle & Dani made the correct call, dashing to the American counter first to discover the flight landed 38 minutes ahead of the United flight and an hour ahead of the Continental flight. Soon, a shuttle carrying the next seven Teams unloaded at the entrance, unleashing a flurry of chaos and confusion as BJ & Tyler joined Danielle & Dani to become the first two Teams on the American flight, along with Fran & Barry, who have been married for 40 years. After making the mistake of going to Continental, friends Eric & Jeremy managed to snake tickets on the United flight, along with mother and daughter Wanda & Desiree, and dating couple Dave & Lori and John & Scott took the last tickets on the United flight, forcing dating couples Joseph & Monica and Ray & Yolanda onto the last place Continental flight with Lake & Michelle, who arrived last to the airport after their huge mistake, and sisters Lisa & Joni, who inadvertently booked the tickets without asking the arrival time.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Because of delays in connecting cities, the United flight landed in São Paolo first at 10:15 am with Wanda & Desiree taking an early lead out of the airport followed by Eric & Jeremy in second. As John & Scott and Dave & Lori snagged taxis of their own, the American flight, scheduled to land first, touched down in São Paolo after being delayed 40 minutes. BJ & Tyler took the early lead from the second group, surpassing Dave & Lori from the first flight.

With the frantic four last place Teams finally landing in Brazil, Wanda & Desiree led the way to the roof of the aptly named Unique Hotel, built in the shape of a ship, to find their clue. Opening it, they discovered they had to travel three miles by taxi to the historic bridge, Viaduto Santa Efigenia. After running out of the hotel in second place, Eric & Jeremy introduced themselves to Danielle & Dani, who had just arrived. After grabbing their clue and a taxi to the bridge, the girls made fun of the guys’ apparent feeble attempt at getting to know them.

TAKING A RIDE

Although the Race tightened up considerably because of the congested traffic, Wanda & Desiree continued to set the pace, being the first to discover the clue box on the Viaduto Santa Efigenia, which spans over a crowded São Paolo street. Opening their clue, they encountered their first Detour, having to choose between Motor Head and Rotor Head. In Motor Head, Teams had to travel one mile to a motorcycle shop and choose a motorcycle frame. Then, using the parts provided and a finished model for reference, they had to finish assembling that motorcycle. Once the mechanic can kick start the bike, Teams would receive their next clue. In Rotor Head, Teams had to travel three miles to an airport and use a flight directory to locate one of three buildings that they would fly to by helicopter. Since the three buildings varied in distance and each location had a limited number of tickets, Teams needed to race to find the closest available building. Once arriving at the rooftop of their selected building, Teams had to search the designated area for their next clue.

Knowing nothing about motorcycles, Wanda & Desiree opted for a helicopter ride, as did BJ & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy. While Fran & Barry arrived at the bridge in fourth place, they squandered their lead over other Teams by walking right past the clue box several times over. After wasting 30 minutes, and falling to seventh place barely ahead of other Teams, Fran & Barry finally found the Detour clue, and then opted to build a motorcycle.

After cab drivers all took Wanda & Desiree, BJ & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy to the wrong airport entrance, Dave & Lori snuck into first place and began searching through the large flight directory for a building, but had difficulty finding the one they wanted. This allowed BJ & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy to arrive and select the closest building, Sao Luis Gonzo, while Dave & Lori opted for Atrium V, the second closest. Arriving in fourth, Wanda & Desiree chose Hotel Melina, the furthest away, because it was the only one they could find in the directory.

While the first four Teams soared through the air, John & Scott struggled as their cab driver still hadn’t taken them to the bridge for their clue. Finally deciding to get out of the taxi, they soon found that no one on the street spoke English to help them. After Scott told his frustrated friend to “relax,” John shot back, “You need to have a direction. So if you don’t, I’m going to come up with one.” Eventually, the duo simply walked to the bridge, as did Lisa & Joni, with both choosing Rotor Head.

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNIN’

Arriving at the bike shop, Danielle & Dani, with no experience at all, began to build a motorcycle. They immediately enlisted the help of a local, who quickly observed, “These girls are crazy.” Just as Danielle & Dani threw in the towel on the task, saying, “We are obviously not mechanics,” Fran & Barry arrived and soon understood why the girls changed Detour decisions.

Landing on Luis Gonzaga building, Eric & Jeremy walked down the stairs and quickly found their clue, moments before BJ & Tyler landed and found theirs as well. Opening them, the Teams learned they had to travel five miles to the neighborhood of Santa Cecilia and find a warehouse where they would witness a traditional Candomblé ceremony, a unique religion practiced by over 2 million Brazilians. Then, for good fortune, they would light a white candle to receive their next clue.

With Lori & Dave and Wanda & Desiree finding the clues at their respective buildings, the determined Lake & Michelle began assembling their motorcycle, while the frustrated Fran & Barry looked on in hopes of gleaning some information. Although Lake promised to help the 40-year married couple after he completed the task, in his excitement after the engine started, he and Michelle took off, only giving the smallest of details. With no other option, Fran & Barry switched tasks as Ray & Yolanda also successfully built a motorcycle. In the taxi to the airport, Fran remarked, “I’m absolutely sick to my stomach. We made a major mistake.”

As Joseph & Monica left the airport, Danielle & Dani took to the air, while the remaining three Teams, Lisa & Joni, Fran & Barry and John & Scott, all battled to find a building in the flight directory. The sisters hollered and cheered in true Texas style as they began their journey in the sky, while John & Scott floundered with the book, taking the last chopper up. While John hadn’t flown in eight years and showed signs of trepidation before the journey, he managed to overcome his fear and even enjoyed the spectacular view the ride afforded him.

THE FINISH LINE

While the battle for last place was heating up, Eric & Jeremy maintained the slimmest of leads over BJ & Tyler as both Teams experienced the boisterous religious ceremony filled with drums and singing, which included a hug from a man with a very large snake. After lighting the white candle, both Teams hoped they had good fortune as the clue directed them to the Pit Stop at Estadio de Pacaembu, a World Cup soccer stadium.

With six Teams finished completing the candle ceremony, Eric & Jeremy held onto their lead, arriving at Estadio de Pacaembu to step on the mat in first place ahead of BJ & Tyler. Phil informed the ecstatic duo they had each won $10,000 for their victory. By entering the stadium through the wrong gate, Dave & Lori settled for fourth place when Wanda & Desiree snuck into third.

After overcoming their very rocky start in Denver, Lake & Michelle nabbed the fifth place spot, followed by Joseph & Monica and Ray & Yolanda. While not helping them, the motorcycle debacle didn’t ultimately destroy Fran & Barry and Danielle & Dani, who took eighth and ninth. Barry remarked, “Hopefully, we put our mistakes behind us. Our forte is our mental ability and that sort of let us down today.”

While John & Scott tried their hardest, in the end, the stunned Lisa & Joni cheered wildly when Phil told them they arrived in tenth place. Stepping onto the mat in last place, John & Scott became the first Team eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. On the adventure, Scott remarked, “The sharing of the growing of the experience is something that’s just a great bond to have.” John added, “We didn’t win the million dollars, but I won a key to the door for the rest of my life. There are things I can do now that I would have never done before.”
