Redskins coach Joe Gibbs upgraded his offense Thursday by adding one of the brightest offensive minds to his sidelines.
Gibbs hired Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, convincing him to sign a three-year contract worth more than $2 million a year. Saunders was considered the leading candidate for the Raiders head coaching job after their first set of three interviews but he had not been offered the job.

NFL ping.
Good! We can use the extra motor oil to hit on all cylinders next year. Great defense, but the offense was spotty all year long.......
The problem on the Redskins' horizon is the QB situation. Brunell's closing in on 40, Ramsey is a below average QB, and the kid they drafted, Jason Campbell, isn't a pro prospect in my eyes.
The organization's "I'll give you all my next year's picks for one today" draft day philosophy is disastrous.
Owl_Eagle(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
Plenty of QBs out there would fit into Gibbs' mold. Yes, Brunell is getting old, but Im really pleased with how well he did this year compared to last season..
I think the Redskins may have the best coaching staff in the NFL right now after this move.
I hate to see my beloved Chiefs lose Saunders, but I can appreciate he thought the head coaching job was his in K.C, and didn't feel like staying when Edwards was hired. He will be missed.
Crap.
OMG! what are the Raiders gonna do? Sherman?
"...what are the Raiders gonna do?"
Did I hear correctly yesterday that Al Davis was entertaining thoughts of Fresno State's head coach...what's-his-face?
Man alive.
I think we need another round-up of all the fired coaches and where they ended up, with another list of all the as-yet-unhired coaches. Is Mariucci anywhere yet?
I can barely keep track.
I know Al has lost his mind, but I dont know if he is completely insane yet. Cam Cameron would probably be his best option.
I dont think Mooch has a job yet, that would be an option as well.
Excerpt:
Back in Green Bay, Brett Favre isn't a coach, yet he's still what you'd call a made man. He too has certain privileges. The worst season of his illustrious career was still fresh in the tundra air when Favre told Packers GM Ted Thompson that he wanted Steve Mariucci to be his next coach. And Thompson listened. Brett Favre is, after all, the franchise player. And it is just and wise to placate the man who's due the lion's share of the Packers' place in contemporary lore. Favre's first choice was former Packers QB coach Steve Mariucci. But apparently Mariucci is persona non grata around Green Bay so he wasn't even offered an interview.
Word has it that Maruicci wasn't all that interested in the gig anyway. See, in addition to guaranteed future employment, Mariucci is currently enjoying that other perk afforded the deposed NFL head coach -- leisure time with pay. The Lions still owe him $5 million. With Maruicci no longer an option, Ted Thompson did the next best thing. He selected Niners offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy.
But the last paragraph of the article was amusing:
Now, I don't want to cast aspersions on the Green Bay Packers, especially on matters of that pesky black coach issue.
(Oh, you knew I was gonna get there eventually!)
In 1999, then-Packers GM Ron Wolf hired current Seahawks defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes as the first black coach in Packers history. Moreover, the hire came after Rhodes had been fired by the Philadelphia Eagles. And by hiring him, Wolf and the Packers made it clear that the rules of made men applied as much to black coaches as their white counterparts.
Git down, 'Pack.
That Rhodes was fired after just one .500 season is a discussion for another time. But, as a bonus question for you, and some delicious irony for me, name the Packers QB coach that disastrous season, a season so bad the head coach had to be fired.
Yep. Mike McCarthy: Made man.
Yea maybe mooch will take a year off and look for an opening next year, every year multiple coaches get fired.
What's Gibbs/Williams going to do when Sean Taylor is playing for the Mean Machine next year?
I don't think that will be a problem, but tell me, who is that statue you have at QB going to throw to if they get rid of Keyshawn Johnson in Dallas?
I think Sean T. will be playing in the yard next year....
