for Tammy
Yeah. She's a phony. She's just too obviously trying to be this year's Carrie Underwood. Been there, done that, and the original is better than Pickler.
Is there anyone we haven't seen much or at all in the earlier episodes who you think is good?
Well if Kelly can beat the odds and win two Grammys, then Carrie can ...
I don't want to jinx it :)
I missed it tonight going to yoga class. I'll have to catch up.
I agree!
Good question. There's so many faces, it's hard to remember them all--and there's a lot that Idol can't or won't show us yet. But Chris Daughtry, the bald rocker from NC, seems to be doing well so far. Other than him and a few others, it's hard to say.
Randy said it best. Kelly's double Grammy win legitimates the show. I think her success even before the Grammys (she won at the VMA's and People's Choice, too) make it OK for people like Jennifer Hudson and Diana DeGarmo to be taken seriously in film and Broadway musicals.
From now on, anyone who comes off AI and has real talent will have more doors open to them.
Unless some newcomer we haven't heard of yet in Country music puts out a real smash of an album, I think Carrie already has a lock on the CMA award for best new artist.
Here's a brief recap of tonight's show:

The singers are pictured at the bottom...four rooms of them. The group in the first room was sent home. The other three rooms will be back tomorrow night.
thanks!
That would be great if she won that :) Carrie has a better chance, IMO, winning on the CMAs than at the Grammys. Unless the Grammy's have a seperate Country category ...
They do. I think the Grammys have best country song and best country album. Not sure, because I have never paid attention. But she'd be up against established stars who put out fresh material this year. The year is not Jan-Dec, either, but something like Nov-Oct.
The thing about the country genre is that it doesn't churn much. Although country music is a big seller, the universe of country artists is much smaller than uban and pop. So albums and songs stay on the charts longer, and there's less frequent turnover in chart positions. When a big-name artist puts out new material, it tends to sell huge and stay on the charts a long time.
Some of the biggest country names are putting out new albums this year. It's tough for a newcomer to compete against them at awards time.
Just now getting to read the thread....we went to dinner with son #2. #1 had to work late and #3 has class on Tues. night....anyway....
Reading your post reminded me of my daddy...we lost him in 1990. I have 5 sisters, no brothers. 6 girls, my mom and dad. Every Valentines Day, all of us girls got a card...and the next day, a beautiful heart box of chocolates! Daddy had to wait for the half price sale to get us all candy! Bless him...he loved giving us those big, fancy hearts!
Maybe this comes from watching the tape at 5am while on the treadmill, but last night's show was, IMHO, pretty sad. Don't understand what the producers are trying to do..but they've lost it...
BY my rough count, last night's show , which was 63 minutes long, BTW.. ( clever ploy to keep viewers tuned into House)..consisted of the following..
3 minutes of opening and closing credits
22 minutes of commericals and promos
3 minute recap at the beginning
5 minutes in total of judges preening, scratching heads, and being snarky
10 minutes to the idiot Brittnum twins
5 minutes to the selection room process
5 minutes to an insipid Brokeback Mountain take-off
5 minutes of various shots of groups eating and rehearsing in the hallways.
1 minute of several shots of the Odeom Theater marquee sayying "Welcome American Idol 2006"
Which leaves, about 4 minutes for actual singing, of which the only decent part was the 1 minute devoted to the 4 teenage boys who did a SUPERB riff on "Fly Me To the Moon.."
So, why has this happened? Just look at the thread..most here, who really enjoy the show, had no interest in it last night
1. The judges have lost it...it gets stale over time..
2. They honestly think that the viewers want more of all this contestant dynamics... a reality aspect to the show, if you will..than the actual singing. If so, I think they are nuts..They could easily fill two more hours with the actual group singing..let us see/hear it, instead of all this crapola.
3. Many of the people who advanced last night were really bad, truly awful...how they even got this far is beyond me..
Which leaves us only one obvious conclusion.. when the steak sucks, sell the sizzle. I think the level of talent overall is really bad this season..we're gonna be dreally disappointed. There may be 3-4 good singers..but the top 24 is gonna, pardon my French, really suck....in fact, I'll state now that the ratings will decline this season..( and that's before Paris has to sing a Barry Manilow song)
OK...I've had my morning rant..flame away..
lost another 2 pounds this week! Bringing my total to 31 pounds lost....That's great! What diet are you using?
I wish the cowboys had stayed instead of the twins--blech!
Me too! At least they were NICE....those twins; what jerks!
But enough of my Brittenum twin impersonation.
On the whole, there were few people cut who didn't appear obviously weak, though I have to admit now that I backed the wrong Barretsmith sister. We didn't see much from the real favorites, such as Lisa Tucker, Paris Bennett, and Katherine McPhee, but given what they were showing, that's probably a good sign for them. Taylor Hicks continues to throw down great performances, from the singing department, but he still has got to work on that eye contact thing if he wants to do well in this competition.
As for this final cut-down tomorrow, I think it's cheap and tawdry television (essentially a "no content" show), but from an auditioning standpoint, it's probably best that the judges get a chance to really review all of the performances so that they don't make a "snap" judgement that passes over someone good while keeping someone who was less consistent.
Really looking forward to the start of live performances next week.
As for the whole Brittenum situation, given what we saw, I would have sent them both home regardless of the "apology" (and, for the record, a proper apology would also have included all of the other contestants, not just the judges). If they're not capable of dealing with criticism, then save everyone the aggrivation and clear them away early.
Just look at the thread..most here, who really enjoy the show, had no interest in it last night
That's not accurate. Most of the regulars here probably had something else to do on Valentine's night. Plus there are the Olympics, which also had a competing live thread. I wasn't surprised by the low turnout last night.
I think the level of talent overall is really bad this season..we're gonna be dreally disappointed.
The show hasn't focused on the talent yet, Ken. This phase is dedicated to the freaks and to the drama--that's the way it's always been.
The final 24 will be selected tonight. And next week the live semi-finals will begin. That's where we'll see the talent.
And they're stupid too! They have more ego than brains.
But I take comfort in knowing that they're already booted from the show :)
At this stage, that's normal.
