It's true, the movie "Brokeback Mountain" does provoke what one researcher calls "a very strong ick factor" in some straight men.
What is it in this story of two cowboy pals in 1960s Wyoming who find themselves in lifelong love -- yet go on to marry women -- that elicits this response from heterosexual males?
The answers are as complex as the plot.
A psychologist who coined the word "homophobic" said the revulsion is precisely that. A scientist who discovered genetic links to sexuality said he simply does not understand the response. The author of "The Sexual Brain" said there is nothing on a neurobiological basis to explain the aversion.
To film fan Eddie Hargreaves of Stockton, it's more like the "ick" of romantic drama. "I'm not going to speak for everybody," he said, "but I don't know a lot of straight guys who said, 'Oh, man, I can't wait to see "Bridges of Madison County," 1995's famous tearjerker.
"Brokeback Mountain," directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee and starring box-office hunks Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, is sparking both critical praise and water-cooler chatter. It's been nominated for seven Golden Globe awards.
But when movie critic Dave White, who is gay, wrote a humorous piece titled "The Straight Dude's Guide to 'Brokeback,' " "I got hundreds of messages, most of whom hated me for just existing," he said...

ICK
Ick!
I wouldn't watch that movie if it was performed by penquins set on fire..
Homosexual love stories rank up high on the list.
Just because I think two guys kissing is gross, does not mean I am 'scared' of homosexuality. I just think it's unnatural and wrong.
I think the idea of putting ketchup on ice cream is gross, but I'm not scared of it.
I watch movies for entertainment, not for agendas.
I grew up thinking that the Marlboro Man was one of the sexiest men alive. Cowboys are manly, testosterone filled mysteries, and every little girl thinks they are just dreamy.
To tell me that some sexy cowboy would rather bag his partner than go out with a beautiful woman is just stomping on traditional opinions of manly men.
If I want to see two guys playing pitch and catch, I'll go to a baseball game.
Trust the SF Chronicle to present you with the complete collapse of a culture as Sunday morning reading.
Straight dudes just don't want to think about gay sex. It's that simple.
We can easily see the road that we are headed down. Anyone who views homosexuality as sinful or perverted behavior will be termed as homophobic, mentally ill, bigoted, etc. It's already happening in other nations. Members of the clergy are being arrested for speaking of homosexuality when they do their sermons. It will come to that here. We are well on our way now.
That article is just plain gay.
For jokes, I asked my hubby to take me to see that movie. He said he'd rather watch "Terms of Endearment" and "Steel Magnolia's" a hundred times. I took that as a strong no.
It makes a difference to me.
They are NOT cowboys.
They are sheep herders. Shepherds.
Good model of this is Canada, PC out of control
"To say that straight guys are missing out because they're unjustly turned off by the plot, well, there wasn't anything to turn them on in the first place," Hargreaves said. "At least 'The English Patient' had a plane crash."
Ick. Abomination. Same diff.
Its just ridiculous the amount of Gay shows and movies, no other minority group with this low numbers gets representation like that, Asians come to mind, they are a forgotten population.
Homophobic? me? you bet your ars I'm homophobic! With good reason too!
Nobody could drag me into that theater.
Revolting!
They heap awards on this dog, it's supposed to be instructive to people like me, but I'll never see it so it ends up affirming the gays about their sexual weirdness.
Fine! Let them go get affirmed.
I won't be getting exposed to their ways, that's for sure!
