Coldplay's new CD has rules: No MP3s, no DVD players, no car stereos

Coldplay's new CD has rules: No MP3s, no DVD players, no car stereos

Coldplay's new CD comes with an insert that discloses all the rules enforced by the DRM they included on the disc. Of course, these rules are only visible after you've paid for the CD and brought it home, and as the disc's rules say, "Except for manufacturing problems, we do not accept product exchange, return or refund," so if you don't like the rules, that's tough.

What are the other rules? Here are some gems: "This CD can't be burnt onto a CD or hard disc, nor can it be converted to an MP3" and "This CD may not play in DVD players, car stereos, portable players, game players, all PCs and Macintosh PCs." Best of all, the insert explains that this is all "in order for you to enjoy a high quality music experience." Now, that's quality.

I wonder how Coldplay feels about their fans getting all these rules set down for them by the music label? I wonder if most fans who read these rules will be wise enough to blame corporate, or whether they'll just decide to dig up a band whose label treats them like customers, not crooks? It's amazing how the labels always seem to come up with new ways of screwing artists: if they're not cheating them out of royalties, they're systematically alienating their fan-base.

You don't want an Edison disc. They use a special needle. Same with Pathe discs. I should know. I have a friend who has a 1920s combi-player that can play both of those PLUS the "78" format that became the industry standard.

Wouldn't want to buy a whole "new" player just to listen to one recording, would you?

there is even an easier way to convert the supposedly uncrackable mp4 format.....just the program ijukebox.

In a minute or so, all itunes files are converted to mp3s and sound perfect.

According to a friend of mine, however, the Edison disks have held up extremely well over the years. Making a quality durable groove recording, especially for use in accoustic players, is not a simple process.

I don't understand WHY they can't be played in Car stereos?

Different kinds CD players use some different basic technology. IOW, most home players are made one way, portables another, car players another, and computer CD drives another. Turns out that many car players are made a lot like computer CD drives (especially if you have one that plays MP3s), so discs designed not to work in computers might also not work in cars.

All the artist's cash comes from concerts.

And that's coming to an end. EMI started the precedent by paying Robbie Williams (extremely popular in Europe) millions up front for a percentage of his concert proceeds. This will eventually filter down, so that part of the standard signing contract will be a take from the concerts. The labels are always looking for a better way to screw the artists, and this is a good one.

BTW, if you like racing, see the video for song "Supreme." They did a bit like Forrest Gump, digitally placing him in clips as if he was in the running for the F1 World Championship against 60s Jackie Stewart. Excellent video.

and it has to be decent orchestras, no "eastern bulgaria district philharmonic"

I saw the Carmina Burana from some out-in-the-boonies Czech philharmonic. The sound was good, even for an outdoor amphitheater, but the conductor's screw-ups were hilarious.

I think I will download some illegal mp3s (even though Coldplay sucks) to stick it to them.

If you think Coldplay sucks (and presumably wouldn't have bought the CD anyway) how is it sticking it to them to download the MP3?

all they need is to start calling it software instead of an album.

That brings its own problems. You are specifically allowed by copyright law to make backups of software (Title 17c Ch. 1, §117(a)). The RIAA doesn't want you doing that.

"Coldplay are a bunch of fags."

You insensitive SOB. This is the new post-Clinton America. We don't say that kind of stuff..."bunch of fags...the nerve of some people! They are NOT a bunch of fags.

Calling them fags might mean Brits mistake them for smokers or something. They are a bunch of a$$masters.
