I got Malkin book fairly cheap via amazon. I think my friend who gave me the book on Shep did the same. Yes, Malkin's book was thin but I enjoyed it.
I have Zell Miller's National Party No More and Deficit
of Decency; may re-read the latter to again enjoy his
recounting of the '04 election--and his speech about Kerry
at the RNC. "Armed with what? Spitballs?"

Terry Prachett's Discworld books are very funny, but he's a bit angry about religion, which makes him less funny, so avoid Small Gods. His Vimes books (Guards, Guards, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay) which tell the tales of the city watch are amusing mysteries largely and are the best.
Am currently reading St. Thomas More's The Sadness of Christ.

"OUTLAW" by Warren Kiefer is the best western book.
It covers a New Mexico outlaw as a young man. He joins the Rough Riders and goes to Cuba. Starts a bank and gets cheated out of it by his friend.
He goes to Mexico and does oil exploration.
He retires to his New Mexico ranch and they try to take it away by eminent domain.

I'm reading (again) Gates of Fire. Read it the first time a couple years ago on a recommendation from Bruce Willis, and reading it yet again because it's just a good book.

Huey Long Invades New Orleans: The Siege of a City, 1934-36 Being from La. I found this book to be the one that answered a great many of my questions about just what was it like during that jerk's time...the power plays, the power players, physical locations of buildings (and their forgotten names), etc. I loved the details and quotes from newspapers to enhance the stories told leading up to the seige.
The main topic of the book is the time when, and I didn't know this until this book, Long declared partial martial law in New Orleans against the mayor's (and his faction's) will just before the upcoming election. He had 'his' National Guard setup in the Soule Building where registrar records were kept replete with machine guns in the windows and gas-masked troops inside the walls.
An aside is that my great-uncle was guarding Long when he was assassinated...oops. My g.u. is also referenced in this book on page 121.

Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It's an excellent account of Lincoln's nomination, election, and presidency. One of the most illuminating books that I've read in years.

I'm reading (again) Gates of Fire.A terrific tale about a battle that may well have stopped a Muslim invasion of Europe that would have wiped out Christianity -entertaining and inspiring.
