The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I had it up and running the other night when a friend of my mother's came over.

He just stood there, mouth hanging open and finally said "Is ~nothing~ private anymore?"

I laughed and told him that he hasn't had any privacy for a while, so he might as well enjoy it.

Love bugging that guy. ;-)

I somehow managed to not take any pics from the 2005 garden, but here are a couple of the 2004 garden:

The '04 beds were 4' x 5'. This year I expanded them to the full 4' x 8' and added a third bed. The blocks are only 8" high, so I dug down and loosened a couple inches of the native soil before I dumped the garden soil on top. The holes in the blocks are perfect for marigolds. This coming year I'm going to have to come up with a better solution for the trellises. The spiffy plastic and aluminum jobbies in the pic got brittle after the first year and snapped with the first big thunderstorm this last summer. So I'm thinking metal pipe.

If 2J wanted to discourage gophers, would she need to bury some chicken wire or hardware cloth down a foot or so around the interior perimeter as she's digging out and readying it for the amended soil? That would keep them from burrowing into it from the outside, right?

I used pvc pipe for mine last year. Then I put plastic (or nylon?) chicken wire on it. Worked pretty good.

What's up with the Gazette? Went to go look at the photo gallery and all of the pictures are gone.

Sorry to make it so complicated :~\

Actually, I'm really most sorry that there are buttheads out there who think it's worthwhile sport to make fun of people.

Don't apologize.

I've seriously considered removing the pictures from my FR home page.

But then it's almost like ~they've~ won.

Yeah - I'm trying to figure out the best way to live with it. It's not FReepers, it's banned asshats over at another site that are doing it. We took the pictures down so they could no longer paw through them. I mean... The part they made fun of is laughable - that I wore tennis shoes (duh - it was a beach wedding, would stilettos have been better?) and had plastic flowers (they were silk, and I arranged them myself) as my bouquet, and that my husband didn't shave (duh, he has a beard) and that he wore a luau shirt. (duh, it was a beach wedding!) Beyond that... I'm fat. (Really! I hadn't noticed!) I wish it was different, but so far, it's a burdon I bear.

So if that's all they've got, they can't really hurt me can they? I mean... I'm really proud of my wedding and really enjoyed sharing it with friends. It's too bad to have to hide it. Maybe I shouldn't, maybe when they mock people in such shallow mean spirited ways they show themselves for what they are.
