"May I introduce to you to a technical standards committee?"
Do I get to come armed?

Of course. Laptop. Your choice of caliber.

"At least half of FReepers are below average."

Freepers follow a different formulation:

Half may be more or less average,
One-third may be somewhat lunatic,
One-fourth are geniuses,
One-fifth are, in all likelihood, saints.
One-sixth are probably addicted to something other than the internet,
One-seventh hold positions in their Church,
One-eighth have Masters degrees,
One-ninth have been arrested,
One-tenth have black belts,
... and so forth, ad infinitum.

They are nasty, stubborn birds

Which is perhaps partly why a certain portion of the bagpipe, with a vague outline similar to that of a goose, is called a... goose.

And in the bagpipe world a "practice goose" is not a verb with modifier.

I think the fever's rising...

The enumeration of your formulation is somewhat... frightening.

Never got beyond my purple belt though.

Ummmm

That's a really scary formula, Bob.
Which fraction do I fit into?

It must be from too many years of getting my information from the MSM.

They always talked about the average person, therefore some would be above, and some below average.

"Median"

If observations of a variable are ordered by value, the median value corresponds to the middle observation in that ordered list. The median value corresponds to a cumulative percentage of 50% (i.e., 50% of the values are below the median and 50% of the values are above the median).

In order to calculate the median, the data must be ranked (sorted in ascending order) first. The median is the number in the middle.

Median = the middle value of a set of data.

Thanks, Sionnsar.

This is a pretty common error in vernacular speech. There are a few places it works, such as Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" where "all the kids are above average"... (relative to what?)
