If you live near a volcano, even one that's been inactive for centuries, there's always a chance of being wiped out by a major eruption. The scientific community is not real great at predicting when this will happen, though.

Sometimes the things just go BLAM! Many other times there's activity in advance suggesting an eruption is imminent, but "imminent" could be tomorrow or next month. It's very hard to plan and order an evacuation until it's just about too late.

Thank God all Irish volcanos are extinct!! Two mountains in Co. Mayo, Nephin, and the historical Croagh Patrick, are both believed to be extinct volcanos.
