My children seem to have a heritage of Norman, Ukrainian, Irish, Scottish, English, and probably a hefty dose of who knows what.

Actually, my ancestry is all over the place because my grandmother's sister didn't adhere to the strict right-line descendancy. She went back as far as she could then, when she hit a dead end, she'd come forward a generation at a time and try the wife's side of that family until she found a traceable lineage.
Well, doing it THAT way, she managed to rope in Spanish, Norman, French, English, Irish, Scot and tie into the whole Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, taking it back to Cerdic of Wessex who immigrated from Gual in 495AD, if you believe that record to be reliable.
