"... perhaps I need to consider relocation."

No, you just have to reconsider your location. (You'll need to familiarize yourself with the candidates -- find out their attitudes about jaywalking ordinances, and such.)

You're a citizen now. Write the incumbents letters. Explain your priorities. Ask for their positions.

Dont forget your letters to the editors. Become a somebody, a character, an institution! You go, girl!

I've been reading the papers and watching the local news on the alphabet channels, and from what I can see, it's a democratic stronghold. The dems thought they could get some money if they began to ticket jaywalkers, and they went full bore.

They are so sure of their positions that it was after I had gone to court and learned that it had been dismissed that they sent me the letter of dismissal...dated October 16, which was a Sunday, and which I received on Friday, October 21...the day AFTER my court date of October 20.

I can't get any satisfaction here without a heart attack or stroke...mine...I'm not into that, thank you very much. If I am going to spend time and effort on being a thorn, I want to make sure that thorn is long, hard and indestructible.

If I start a fight, I want to make sure I can finish it.

Years ago I would have laughed at that. No more.

It's been a decade or more since the local paper last called to verify my authorship of letters to the editor. I e-mail the letter in, and usually within a couple of weeks it appears in the paper.

And more legislators know who I am than I do they. (Of course, they usually know me as the faceless author of letters about legislation that the goodwife delivers personally and lobbies on -- it was interesting to make the rounds in Olympia early this year: when I was introduced there was most always this "Oh, so YOU'RE..." reaction.)

Write them letters. Short and to the point (*never* ramble, never rant).

And thank them for their response (if you possibly can) -- they get too few thanks, ever, from constituents. Those who do thank them will get remembered. And more attention in the future.

I have made a difference in the laws governing this state. Certainly not as much as I would like, but things are better than if I had done nothing at all.
