"Just want to get out there and absorb some of the Christmas spirit"

What Christmas spirit? I just home from doing a little necessary shopping and all I could see was a bunch of people trying to scarf up the discounted wares of nervous merchants who are hoping to dump their seasonal overstock before the 12th hour. Nobody is smiling and nobody is wishing anybody anything. No Merry Christmas; no Happy Holidays...nothing, and I'm in the Bible Belt. A sign just as you go into Hastings said something like "last minute....we got you covered. Now I guess you have to use your imagination as to what they mean by last minute.

Personally, I wish Christmas would just go away. Oh, not the meaning of Christmas, or the spirit of Christmas, but all the sickening secular, political and commercial crap that has become attached to it. I no longer find any joy in it. I wasn't that fond of the season before, but with each passing year, its approach brings with it an increasing sense of dread.

There was an editorial in our paper this morning talking about the nearly total absence of "Christmas" in advertising and businesses that are exploiting it. It concluded with the following sentiment: "So go ahead stores. Call it what it really is: "The Greed Stampede." Or how about, "Last Chance of the Year to Lift the Sagging Economy" sale?".

Oh well; hope YOU enjoy yourself out there anyway.

Back from shopping. Not bad at all. Very good actually. Good parking at the mall, short line at Nordstrom rack. Costco didn't have enough free samples today though for breakfast, came home starving! LOL

In Shrek, I lost it when Shrek was going to visit the ogre lady and give her some flowers and he overhead her saying she would never go out with such an ugly guy, or something like that. HE felt so bad and walked away. But it was such a misunderstanding!!!! Unrequited love. That breaks my heart. (You thought that was funny?) At least they got together finally in the end. The suspense was too much! LOL!

Excellent. The next chapter should address establishment of paternity.

I had fun this morning. Cars were going the opposite direction when I came home. It's cold and freezing out here so everyone probably slept in.

I hear ya about the anti-Christmas spirit out there to ruin everyone's Christmas, but I aint gonna let it happen. :-) At least I try real hard not to. I bought a live Alberta Christmas tree last week for $30 at Costco. This week it was marked down to $20, so I bought a Blue Spruce. Just love them. Each year I try to buy a live one and plant it in my yard. I've been here since '92 and have quite a forest growing. Of course some have died and some have dried up because I forgot to plant them. LOL

I did buy a huge Poinsetta last week and neglected to water it, so it dried up and lost all its leaves already. So now I have to nurse it back to life if I can. Poor plant.

The thing that got me though is that there are no more after Christmas sales! Like you said, they made a switcheroo and are now suckering people in before Christmas. Bummer.

Libby, hope you have fun baking those cookies for your family today. I think that is so cool! ;)

Here are a few things to think about:

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. . but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

If you drink Pepsi at work in the Coke factory, will they fire you?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

How come we choose from just two people for President and fifty for Miss America?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.

If a 911 operator has a heart attack, whom does he/she call?

Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet soup?

Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, "I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink whatever comes out!"

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer? (I think they figured this one out)

When your photo is taken for your driver's license, why do they tell you to smile? If you are stopped by the police and asked for your license, are you going to be smiling?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!

What do you call male ballerinas?

Can blind people see their dreams? Do they dream?

If Wyle E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Is Disney World the only people trap operated by a mouse?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride; he sticks his head out the window?

Unrequited love. That breaks my heart.

But they get together, right? There is so much to laugh at in those movies, I guess I overlooked the goofy melodrama.

Sorry about that.......

You have to admit, the love scenes with the Dragon falling for the donkey are hysterical. Or the Swedish accent of the 3 pigs, or the muffin man scene "Noooo! Not the buttons!"......just too much funny stuff.

Hmmm...not sure about the Italian restaurant, but the Best Western across from the track is owned and/or operated by a FReeper/lurker. WAS a pretty nice place till it got overrun with Katrina evacuees....the lower class sort. I stayed there when I was down visiting a client in a rehab facility a couple of months ago. I hardly recognized it. He had no idea when and/or if they would even be paid.

I enjoy the occasional day at the track. I've never actually been to that one. In fact, I haven't really been to any track excepy Churchhill Downs. Hot Springs is about 3 1/2 hours away. I get down there every now and then. I do have to travel around quite a bit with my job. If I know ahead of time when you're coming, I could plan one of my trips to Little Rock for the same time and just do an overnight in Hot Springs. It's only about 45 minutes or so from there. Sounds like fun. Wonder if the track has blue thingies.

The kids I'm taking are 12, 14 and 6. The older two are foster kids and the younger one is a coworker's grandson. She had planned to go with us, but she's been having a real bad week and isn't getting around too good. I'm sure that scene is the reason for the PG-13 rating. I look at it kinda like I looked at the crucifixion in the Jesus movie that I took Dawn to when she wasn't yet 3. There are some things that you want to make an indelible impression. In this case, 3 might be a bit young, but at 6 it can be an opportunity to explain the significance of the event, and the emotional impact of it is likely to stick with them.

I knew you would like that Darks. Scaring the kids for Christmas, almost as good as locking them in a haunted house. :)

I think you're very right about that......just thought I'd give you a heads up about the scene for any little ones. If you liked the Chronicles, I think you'll really like the movie. No movie is perfectly like a book its based on, but I give this one a 10 for putting in the important essence of the book that CS Lewis gave us.

Haven't started the cookies yet. I think I'm going to mix up the batter and stick it in the fridge till after the movie. Otherwise, they won't all get done before I have to leave, and I don't want to have to do it in two sessions. I really need to get this stuff out of the way today so I can get my court reports written tomorrow; plus, I have to do a termination summary, and those are a royal pain. I have 3 termination hearings coming up in January and I've only gotten the termination summary done for one of them.
