Much has been lost over the years.
Greek Fire was described as being hypergolic in its behavior, yet the Greek Fire that scientist 'recreate' is not hypergolic, nor as dangerous as the history says it was.

The books were delightful and inspiring. Dawn absolutely loved them as a child and still does. Tyler started getting into the stories this summer. We're all looking forward to the movie.

I've always wondered about Greek Fire and other flammables from history.
There were reports of 'eternal flame' lamps that had a unique oil or something in them that burned for a long time without need for replensishing the oil for awhile.
Supposedly smelled sweet as well or some such if memory serves, probably doesn't.

But.. nobody knows what the stuff was, and volatiles tend to evaporate away over the centuries.

"I'd like to see The Silver Chair done."

The Horse and His Boy was my favorite. Of course, being a lifelong horse lover probably has a lot to do with it Voyage of the Dawn Treader was my second favorite.

"One of my favorite characters........"

Yes, Puddleglum was noteworthy....as was Reepicheep. And I loved the part in Dawn Treader about Eustace turning into a dragon. Wretched little brat he was. Served him right.

You are probably correct about the smell.
Many things related to Science were lost in the middle ages.
