The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's really weird about that kid showing up at your house. I'm glad nothing bad came of it but I hate it that it's made you nervous on your own place. That's really aggrivating. I had something similar happen to me several years ago and it took me a long time before I quit jumping at every little rustle in the bushes when I went out to feed.

he told me to turn the lights on out there before it gets dark, then when I go out it won't be dark.

Mercury Vapor lights that come on automatically!

That's a cool purse Hair! I'd love to see a crook's face if he snatched it and found himself stareing down the barrel of a gun.

Isn't Mack a pretty big guy? The kid had guts even carrying on a conversation, really...

Desperate people scare me.

Heh... yeah - Wouldn't expect that!

When the gun is snapped and velcroed in there, it's strong enough to carry it by the strap... But give it a good tug and it breaks free. So I'd often walk with it around my wrist and tucked under my arm.

This boy is 16 and mentally challenged. I thought he was drunk or on downers, he was very slow, and hard to understand when he talked. We didn't realize till we got the phone call the next day that he was the same boy that they were searching for before. We never shut our big door. We just had the storm door, so the kid could look into our living room. I thought the same thing, that when the kid saw Mack stand up, I was surprised he didn't take off:). I think the cold is what drove him to come to the door. He didn't have anything but a sweatshirt hoodie on and light weight jogging pants, no gloves.

We have a mercury light in our front yard. That lights up the front of the house, Unfortunatly, it throws the stuff of the far side of it into shadow and makes it more dark out at the barn. I'm just going to start turning on the lights when I do the afternoon feeding and leave them on till I'm done with the night one. That will only be 3 60 watts not that big of a deal.

Is what I'd like to do is have a switch run to the house that I could turn the lights on out at the barn from the house. Have flood lights mounted on all sides pointing out across the property on all sides. I had an aunt that when her husband died she had a switch put in at the head of her bed. It turned on lights in every room of the house and flood lights out side.

Wow, that sounds cool! It would require a major electrical re-wire I think, but it'd probably be worth it. It's probably something that a person ought to think about and plan for when and if they ever build a house from scratch.

She had alot of money. She was older too, and it was a big house on about a 2-3 acre lot, so she was a bit isolated.

I agree with you about those big overhead lights creating more shadow than they help sometimes. I saw a show once about that very topic and they had somebody go hide in the shadows, not in the bushes or anything, just in the shadows, while somebody else walked past them in the light and the person never saw them until they were right on top of them. I think they were suggesting pathway lighting instead of the big overhead streetlight type fixtures.

Kind of off topic, but is anyone watching the Olympics??? Did you see it last night, the replays of the pairs skater where the guy dropped his partner from an overhead lift a year or so ago??? Dam that was a hell of a fall for that girl...I don't know if I could come back after that especially with the same partner, and they won the gold last night. It was pretty good.

I was just thinking another mercury light out at the barn might do it.

I've got one (at the store actually) by the front gate and one at the front of the barn.... plus the porch light, I can see the whole front yard.

Oh yeah, putting one out at the barn would help. I've wanted to move the one in the yard out there, but Mack likes having the front yard lit up. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have two:)

I have a family member who is mentally challenged and in a foster home. Running away is what she does when things don't go her way. The homes I have visited are mhmr or run by the state and are understaffed. From personal experience, I know the staff will not search at night or for very long in the day. My family member is a person of habit. Like may many mentally challeged people I have met, she frequents places she likes and remembers people who give her what she wants. I don't want to scare you but if this boy is a constant run away he may show up again because in his mind you gave him what he wanted. You will need to let him know he will not get his way at your place and that he is not welcome there. You might try asking his case manager to make it clear to him that he is not welcome at your home and that you will call them if he comes back.

Some kind of dialogue box came up wanting to format? Change the format or something? We said yes - it's working on that now.
