The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Cindy,

I swear she understands you, really. All my animals understand me when I talk to them. Except my husband.

Good Morning.

Winter is back.

Becky, do you have a little greenhouse for starting your seeds?

No, no green house. Just some of the started trays you can get at Walmart.

Ok, but where do you keep the trays? By the windows?

When I used to have a big garden, I started all my seeds. Vegetable, flowers, herbs. It was a lot of work, but fun too.

I've just got them by a window. Will that work?

I've never done this before, and I've planted some varities I've never grown before.

I've actually been wondering if our house is to cool for this to work. I thought about turning one of our space heaters on in a back bedroom, but that seems like an awful lot of expense just for flowers. But I have been wondering. We turn all heat off at night, and even during the day we're pretty cool in here...am I messing up:)?

I think for seeds to germinate you just need to stay above 50 degrees or so... and you're probably above that...

Good morning! Wasn't around much over the weekend with company here, but we had a really nice visit! The storm I was worried about wasn't so bad here... winds are funny that way, they don't blow the same in all places.

Cyn seems better in pony's stall, and pony seems fine in hers. Not sure what that was all about. I'd like to switch them back eventually but we'll give it a few more days like it is.

Here's a wind storm puzzler (posted also in the HH)

The tree fell from the right-hand side of the road...

Here's my questions....

How did it get hung up on the lower line (which is cable) and not on the upper lines (which are power and telephone). The down tree is at least as tall as those you see there.

Why didn't whoever cut it off the road cut it again on the other side of the cable to get it off the cable?

The neck also has better drainage in most cases than the rump, so if an abscess forms, it's easier to deal with. If you really have to give a shot in the rump, inject the leg on the *opposite* side from where you are standing. They usually kick with the leg that got poked.

Needles do break on occasion, esp if the horse is fractious. I've had the hub of the syringe break off as well.

Personally, I like the stick-the-needle-in-first approach. It gives them a chance to settle down after that huge horsefly bit them in the neck. :)

The top of your refrigerator works good for germinating. The seeds need the soil warm from the bottom. Soil heating tapes work very well. The window might be too drafty. Once the seeds sprout, it's a good idea to put them under fluorescent lights. Otherwise they will lean towards the light coming in the window and get spindly.

Here's my theory on your tree question: The tree hit the top 3 lines and bent, because they were so close together. When it slid down off of them the tip straightened back out before it hit the bottom cable and took it down. As for why they didn't cut it off the cable instead of just off of the road, it probably falls into this category...

When I home schooled my son did this as a science project. He kept taking the seeds out of the dirt to check their progress though

I guess it's possible, but I think the tree was too big to bend, even that much higher..

I wondered if the power lines might have just broken originally, and the power company had already been out to fix them but that they had also decided the tree wasn't their problem since it's now only on the cable.

I couldn't see how much tree was on the lefthand side of the road but you're probably right. I can see the power company guys saying "screw the cable company" and leaving it where it fell.

I got Grace taken up to the trainer's on Saturday morning. She was NOT a happy camper! She kept hollering for me like she was saying "don't LEAVE me here!" Poor girl.

The trainer used to own her daddy and he thought she looked just like him. He's got a gelding and another stud that's about the same age as Grace, both out of the same sire as Grace, and they all look very similar. It's their daddy's genes coming through I guess. He seemed to think she would turn out really well. I hope he's right. He'll keep her for a month and she should be trail-ready. Then it'll be time to take Hope for training. I'll be able to take all kinds of people riding with me pretty soon.

I took my son to see them when he was 16. I got misted eyed looking at them. He was rubbing his eyes to but he was looking at the Budweiser Girls.

Thanks. The neck it is. The scratching and smaller needle really seems to work better. It takes longer to inject the medicine but it doesn't seem to hurt as much. 6 more to go :')
