The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It is quite common with warmbloods as the foals are all fully registerable. Because of the court case, the AQHA accepts multiple foals as well. AI has been used for quite some time for warmbloods and QH stallion stations.

The Jockey Club is very old-fashioned and slow to accept new things. I think part of the problem is that they are afraid of how easy it would be to mix up and AI the wrong stallion's semen, and worry that a narrowing of the gene pool would occur as everyone wants the hottest stallions anyway. This is self-limiting right now in Tb because a stallion can only physically breed a certain number of mares during a breeding season. Another viewpoint comes from a belief that something extra happens during the actual live breeding that impacts the vitality of the foal. Kinda superstitious and without scientific validity, but still believed by some.

I think eventually the Jockey Club will join the 21st century and allow on premises AI at least. This would mitigate breeding injuries and wear and tear on the stallion from rising on his hind legs so much. Seattle Slew actually had vertebral problems due to a long life of breeding and had surgery several times to relieve his pain and discomfort.

Stallions breeding mares in the wild do not seem to suffer from the same problems because they breed a very limited number of mares compared to commercial stallions. Typical wild families consist of 10-20 mares at most. Some popular Tb stallions who do double-duty in both hemispheres are breeding upwards of 200 mares each spring. That is a lot of wear and tear on their joints, tendons, and muscles.

Well, I'm kind of old fashioned too I guess:'). A pasture romp just seems more natural but realistically I can see how owners want to protect their mare and stud investments.

Hey, I understand. I guess I sort of do the same thing and some of that stuff. I always try to worm my horses right before feeding time. I worm then they get fed. Part of that is tho, I've wondered if it would be less upsetting to not get it on an empty stomach.

That really might work to have the strange people out on trails give treats. But then again, my craziness comes into play. I really don't like having any one strangers or not, coming up to my horse and even petting when I'm riding. I realize I'm a bit of a fanatic:), LOL. I think it comes from not having the confidence to deal with ANY form of brattiness from a horse. I'm always worrying about creating a bad habit. The lady that I got some tips from way back when I bought my first Arab was the one that told me that was something that beginners should consider. If something a beginner is doing could create a bad habit can they deal with it successfully...There's alot of things I'm not sure what to do about so I try to avoid getting it started.

One thing Harley has started doing is really wanting to rub on me when I'm trying to take off the bridle. I've noticed most horses try this at some point. I've been bashed in the head enought by them doing this to really hate that, but I've never really found a way I like to deal with it???? I hate slapping one in the head, afraid of making one head shy.

Yesterday the big dummy caught me off guard big time. I had gotten off out on the trail to pee. (it happens:), He was munching grass beside me. Well I was going, and all of a sudden he swung his head at me to be rubbed and banged me in the head. About knocked me over, Peed all over the back of my pants, LOL, I jumped up and hollered enought that he backed off. I had to stand there a bit and rub my head. So, I learned a lesson there. Don't squat so close to him:)

I've had this problem too and what I do is I won't take the bridle off until they're still, no matter how long it takes. It usually doesn't take too long before they figure it out. They want the bridle off worse than they want to scratch. I'll give them a good face rubbing once I have their halter on.

I do the same thing when I'm taking the halter off and they want to jerk their head up. I won't take the halter off until they lower their head and leave it there.

Oh, and I learned the same lesson about squatting too close to my horse, along with the one about not squatting on my spurs! ;o)

Had to share this one with ya. This little guy is the 3mths premature son of a friend of a friend. The band around his left forearm is his Dad's wedding ring. The hands in the pic are his Mom's. He seems to be doing fine. I just thought it was amazing how tiny he is. I think he weighed just a hair over 2lbs when he was born. I think he's up to 2.27 now.

Good morning!

I am so excited!

I just had my first English riding lesson ever and my teacher said it was rare that someone could pick it up in a matter of minutes!

Her husband was in the area also, training a horse and he said it takes some people months, which I find hard to believe

I was trotting and I asked her what I was doing was called and she said (I think)
"A rise posting while trotting"

I am a "natural horse woman and didn't know it!

LOL

Sounds like you've got it all together! Congrats! Did her husband ever talk her into letting you ride that younger horse?

Well, it's kinda weird. When I posted it, I could see it, but when I hit Refresh I get the Red X until I copy the properties and paste it on the address line, then it displays and stays displayed until I hit Refresh again. Strange!

Well, We've had breakfast and are talking about a bad wind storm that is coming.

Probably unrelated, Cyn's freaking out. She didn't want to come in her stall last night. When I finally got her in she stood pinned against one side of her stall staring and blowing at the back wall of the barn. Weird. I think she stood most of the night last night. When I let her out this morning, I knew to be OUT of the way because she was gonna bolt out of there, and she did. Weird. No explanation for it. Nothing new or happening on the back of the barn.

I don't know, I think horses sense weather changes, and know when it's going to be bad. Look out, I've learned first hand what wind can do:)

I'm just back from town. sigh, I bought more bulbs for my garden. I'm so ready to start planting and really have a long time to wait. I did plant a tray of seeds in the house the other night.

I want to ride this afternoon, but it's really staying chilly here. I'm hoping it will warm up more.

So are you all just going to vegetate in the house till this evening?
