Yeah - it doesn't look like a severe bit at all, it looks like what I call a grazing bit... jointed, but with shanks and a chin strap.
I was merely surprised she was in a leverage bit at all... I've usually seen them started in either a snaffle or a bosal for the first few months.

Hey, have you done any more walking.

Sat, I finished up 4 weeks of 2 20 minute walks a day, 6 days a week. I "think" I'm finally starting to see/feel results. But lordy, do I look forward to Sun:).

I would think alot would depend on the horse's needs, and what it's going to be used for ultimately.

Persoanlly, I think snaffles are way overrated:)

I'm in Waco, been busy with stuff. Have you talked to Mom?
I haven't talked to her in two weeks. Mac answered the phone once but she wasn't there.

Heh... I don't think this is the right place or time to detail the kinds of shenanigans I got away with when I was a kid. :~D

No - I haven't been good about walking at all... been too nasty out. My aerobic workout today will be stalls... We let them go all weekend, just putting new stuff on top... and the horses were in longer than usual because of the ick. We opted for relaxing while ecurbh was here, saving work till the weekday. They'll be bad underneath ;~D

Sat was icky here too. I did miss the afternoon walk that day. I just couldn't make myself get out in the drizzle, but more because I was tired. The morning walk I wore my hat and new rain coat tho. Worked very well.

Shoveling stalls is good work. I don't know why tho, but Harley has stopped pooping in his. Rocky never did, so I don't have anything to shovel anymore.

Bay's door stays open, and he doesn't poop or pee in his stall either. He does poop right outside his door in the lean to when it's nasty, so I still have to shovel that. The mares are closed in though, so they have to go, and they do... freely :~D

Well, the last 24 hours we've had 3.7 inches of rain... that's really remarkable for here. Our typical rain is long lasting drizzle, not downpours.

We've never had ANY standing water here before.

Or here...

The drainage ditch worked marvelously. The paddock is muddy but it's not a lake. The low spot beyond, that it drains ~into~ is FULL though.

We have 5 acres and 17 horses :) That's plenty of room.

Aw Barb! I'm so sorry about your mare. It had sounded so hopeful when they removed the lump and she perked up. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Quote from my daughter about the bit:

the bit is a tom thumb snaffle and he uses that on her and an o-ring. He likes to use the tom thumb because of the shank, he can get more bend in the horse. And the chin strap is so loose on the bit that it does nothing anyhow.

Thanks for posting the picture, Hair. :')

Tom Thumb... that's the term I couldn't remember.

Very good... it was a surprise and not a criticism at all... I've used those bits.

That poem is one of the nicest ones I've read. I'd seen several about dogs but none about horses. It's a keeper. Thanks for sharing it.

I saw Extreme Home Makeover and it was great. Those were some very special people and I'm glad they got such a cool place. But I was worrying about how they'd pay the taxes on the place. I had never thought about it before but I just recently read an article about the Home Depot Dream Home contest and how those people who win were never really expected to be able to keep the place, that most of them sell it. The one I was reading about said that just the taxes on the place were nearly a million dollars. The guy that won it was trying to keep it by turning it into a time-share or something like that but the homeowners association where the place was wouldn't let him do it. It sounded really sad. I don't know what ever ended up happening. But that's why I was wondering about how these people were going to do it. Hopefully the winnings taxes were paid for them, but that still leaves them to pay for the increased property taxes to their county every year. Hopefully they won't be that much.

Let the horses out just now to explore their new lake. Bay ended up on the wrong side of the fence in the back forty... so the mares explored it first.

Pony went right in...

I really thought Cyn was gonna roll, she got all rubbery in the knees and I was ready to capture the spectacle, but she thought better of it I guess and never did.

When I finally went and got Bay, he just skirted around the edge... the wimp.

Anyway - fun with big mud puddles...

Well, I finally got caught up again after the weekend off. It sounds like everybody but me got rained on. It was a gorgeous weekend here, sunny and in the middle 60's. I finally got a ride in after 3 weeks off and Bob did great. I even rode him for the first time in a crupper and he didn't seem to mind all that much. I decided to use it after the last ride to the big rocks when my saddle almost slid off over his head while we were going down hill. He got a little of a bow in his back one time while we were racking down the trail at a pretty good clip, but other than that I couldn't tell any difference so I guess I'll just use it all the time like I do his breast collar. I took a few pictures but the camera batteries went dead. I forgot to bring the chips today so I'll post them tomorrow.

It rained pretty hard Saturday night but was bright and sunny again by Sunday morning. I can live with that! I managed to get a roll of hay out for the horses at my BIL'S and got all of Truly's and half of Bluebell's feet trimmed yesterday afternoon and that was all my back would take. That combined with Saturday's ride after being off for 3wks has me walking like an old lady today.

I have a Natural Balance Trimming & Shoeing seminar lined up to go to the weekend of Feb 10th, 11th & 12th and I'm really looking forward to it. I don't plan to actually try to put on shoes, I just want to learn how to trim better. The good thing is that I e-mailed the girl who is sponsoring the clinic to see if they needed any additional horses for the hands on demo part of the clinic and she said she could use one and maybe two of mine so I'm at least going to take Tennessee and possibly the little filly Ellie. I've worried about Tennessee's feet for a long time and I just don't like how they look with my current farrier doing them. I'll be glad to have him evaluated by a Master Farrier. I also found out that there's another farrier from my area who is going to be at the seminar learn these methods so if Tennessee needs anything special I can call on this guy to come do it.

I'm suprised that at least one of them didn't roll in it, but it looks like they had fun anyways. Cyn looks like she had been rooting her nose in the water. If given the chance, all of mine will stand in the water and paw until you think they're going to knock the bottom out of the stream, usually soaking me in the process.

Sounds great to go to a clinic like that... while I don't think I'd want to shoe either, it'd be good to learn to trim the barefoot ones.

Glad you got to ride finally. Bay's got so much wither I'd never lose the saddle forward, I can imagine it can be weird getting them used to it the first couple times it comes into play.

I'm glad she didn't roll in it, it'd have filled her blanket with water. They only repel water that comes from the outside ;~D
