The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Cool - looks like good exploring in there. Is that house on your property? I saw talk of an old house, but not what started it all.

I was told it was completely consumed in the fire. It sat in a rural setting all by itself, quite a ways from a fire dept. Really sad for everyone to lose this one.

Found this one while flying one afternoon. It was an old mansion built by a businessman somewhere around 1900. Took a couple weeks to find out who owned it and to get permission to see it. You can bet I took my camera along though.....

Really sad. I'm glad you got pictures. I like the fireplaces.

Ah - I see. It's a cool old place. It looks like it had a story once.

It sat on a small hill and would have been perfect for a cattle farm. You should have seen the fireplaces inside. Plus there were twin staircases just inside the front door. The one on the right led to a room used by a visiting priest. It was an all day trip back then just to go to the church. So the priest came to visit overnight.

Thanks, it has many stories. This business failed but they started another about fifty miles away. The second one is still in operation to this day.

Cindy, no. The dust doesnt bother me. I just hide behind a pair of big sunglasses anyway to protect my skin and my eyes from the sun. It keeps out the dust.

Wow that is a beautiful picture

I am sure ya all have read this but I just found it on a Mustang site

The Horse's Prayer

"To thee, my master, I offer my prayer. Feed me, water and care for me, and, when the day's work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed and stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort.

Always be kind to me. Talk to me. Your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you. Never strike, beat or kick me when I do not understand what you want, but give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding, see if something is not wrong with my gear or my feet.

Do not check me so that I cannot have the free use of my head. If you insist that I wear blinders, so that I cannot see behind me as it was intended I should, I pray you be careful that the blinders stand well out from my eyes. Do not overload me, or hitch me where water will drip on me. Keep me well shod. Examine my teeth when I do not eat; I may have an ulcerated tooth and that, you know, is very painful. Do not tie my head in an unnatural position, or take away my best defense against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my tail. I cannot tell you when I am thirsty, so give me clean, cool water often. Save me, by all means in your power, from that fatal disease - the glanders. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me, that by signs you may know my condition. Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun, and put a blanket on me, not when I am working but when I am standing in the cold. Never put a frosty bit in my mouth; first warm it by holding it a moment in your hands.

I try to carry you and your burdens without a murmur, and wait patiently for you long hours of the day or night. Without the power to choose my shoes or path, I sometimes fall on the hard pavements which I have often prayed might not be of cement but of such a nature as to give me a safe and secure footing. Remember that I must be ready at any moment to lose my life in your service.

And finally, o my master, when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured and starved to death; but do thou, my master, take my life in the kindest way, and your God will reward you here and hereafter. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was born in a Stable, Amen"

She might be. Her glands are still swollen and tight but I think it might be down a little. She's touchy but acting ok. Appetite still good and she doesn't feel hot so that's a good sign.

Hair, I wish patience worked here and I think if she were smaller I might have better leverage but I'm not so sure. I've never had a pony.;-o (Poor me, huh? ;).) Anyway, today she almost ripped off my shoulder when I had the de-wormer near her mouth. (I was holding her halter/lead with my left hand. The one with the already damaged rotator cuff.)

Nah. She gets better each time but her immediate response is to throw up her head and prance and prance and... well, you get the idea. And since Arabs are notorious for their endurance, I dont have the time to wait it out!

But seriously, she's come a long way. Every horse is different. Whatever works and doesn't come with brute force (which is why that cowboy got trampled and deservedly so. She was just a baby! In hindsight I thought it was pretty funny*, actually. You don't push around this horse. He should have known better.)

* These are the same people who shot and/or poisoned three dogs for getting into their garage. screw 'em.;-P

Stud owner will probably care that she has a cold though :) In the wild and in civilization, she'll kick the heck out of the stud if she's not feeling good.

Figure 342 days average, and try not to breed until March, then even if it's an early foal, it will still be no earlier than January. Horse registries use birthdates on papers but for shows, etc. figure Jan 1 birth.

For SL's sake, and yours (heartbreak) wait until she's in good health. Otherwise, high chance of her not settling or of her slipping the foal in a month or so.

Haven't got to the end of the thread yet - hope I'm going to run into pictures.

I like that... some of the references make me think it was written for a city carriage horse.
