This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I have so, had it. Sarah Lee isn't well. She had to stop to rest after being led 1/2 way across the pasture. She has green snot dropping from her left nostril and a hard knot about the size of a lemon on the right side. $%#^. It's cold and raining and the owner p/o at me and I'm just over all p/o period. I tried to call her. I told the worker which stall she liked to use for sick horses. He told me it was broke and opened up another for her. She's upset because now they have to throw shavings away and disinfect it.
In the summer we get what we call bots on their coats. I use one of those charcoal pads you would scub a grill with and gently rub them down. I keep them clean but they just show up.
We save the tubes. Ours get three dosing. An applesauce, the wormer and an applesauce to chase it.
uhhh... I hate to tell her this, but they'd have to throw the shavings out after any horse uses it. She's a boarding stable for cyrin' out loud.
But on a more important note... what's up with her? are you calling a vet out?
Not yet. She's not running a temp. I started her on antibiotics. If it's strangles again I want to catch it early. I was told that would just delay a rupture but I've seen what waiting looks like.
My pony is the only one that's difficult about worming, and granted, it makes a big difference that she's not tall. But still, I use the patience method with her. When I approach her with the tube, she'll resist and throw her head and whatnot, but I just calmly sit and rub her on the muzzle with the tube until I can get it in her mouth without squeezing it, and let her mouth it. Then when she's calm about that I squeeze. It takes about 10-15 minutes sometimes, but even being small, she isn't the kind of horse that can just be muscled into it. she can drag two cowboys across the yard almost as easy as one ;~D
There wasn't a horse in it. It was clean and ready. Now he has two stalls to fix up. The one with the chickens and the one Sarah Lee went in.
OK I guess... I don't have any hesitancy to call a vet if a horse is sick.
Point is, I wouldn't worry about the guilt trip that she messed up a stall. It's a boarding stable... cleaning a stall is part of the day.
What did he do the last time? Besides she would be an old lady by the time he came out. She's not running any temp and had a good appetite.
I don't feel guilty at all.
I'd get some blood work done on that horse. She should not be getting this sick this often. Are there any other horses around sick?

I agree, if she can't walk across a pasture, she needs to be seen by a vet, temprature or not. Especially if there are no other horses around that are sick.

I was talking to Eddie about that last week. I may draw some and take it in Monday. I'll see what or if the vet wants. She gets a lot of colds but other horses are sick when she is and it's always after a cold/rainy spell. That's why I was asking about vitamins. . She doesn't look sick. She had to stop and blow that stuff out and seemed a little tired and I let her rest a few minutes. It may just be a cold again. Just strange the one side draining and she has a knot on the other. I have to go back out there this evening. I'll see hows she's doing. As long as I finish it up a dose of AB shouldn't hurt even if viral. I couldn't have got my vet out today and that is all the house vet would probably do. The owner will be back this evening and she's going to look at her too.
Ok, this doesn't sound as bad as your first post.Take a picture of the knot. I'd be interested in seeing it in case it is strangles. I've never seen it.
Maybe you worry to much:). I've had horses blow crap from their noses, I've had them seem tired, I do the same thing some days. It can mean nothing. Especially if there is no temp. Like Hair said tho, I wasn't there, I haven't seen her. Sometimes I/they will perk up and seem better after some exercise.
I'm just trying to say, don't read illness into every bit of snot, cough, tiredness you see and I don't know that you do. With the weather the way it's been, she just may have allergies.
Anyway, hope she is better soon.

Ok. I called and talked to him. He told me it was very possible to get strangles again and to continue her on the antibiotics and unless she gets worse to call him back Monday and let him know how she's doing and we will talk about if he needs any lab work then. He told me around here that it's common for horses to get colds in the winter.
My horses can go through periods of runny nose or eyes, but never a color, always clear. It's the swollen lymph gland that would concern me. Especially because Strangles has already been in that barn recently. I'd like to see a picture too.
I was reading this post again. Where is the knot? I think, but I'm not sure, that the swellings they get from strangles is underneath, like between their jaws.

Heh - yeah - it doesn't say neck, but I made the assumption it was the lymph nodes in the throatlatch area.
