This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Strangles is a disease caused by the bacteria streptococcus equi. The name comes from the fact that it enlarges the lymph nodes between the jawbone, causing the horse to make strangled breathing sounds.
The disease begins with high fever, depression and lack of appetite. There is also a thin, watery nasal discharge that quickly turns thick and yellow.
What's happening to your horse? The lymph nodes in the upper respiratory tract become enlarged, the ones between the jawbones being the most noticeable; they can abscess.
Doesn't sound like what you have described since she doesn't have a fever. If she has anything it's probably just a cold. I'd go back and ride her tonight.
Becky
The swelling is on the right side of her inner jaw bone towards the back. Throat latch area as Hair mentioned. I don't think a picture would show anything because it's more feel. The same area on the left is tender. I noticed it because I was trying to figure out where her pulse was and I couldn't get it on the left and went to try on the right.
Oh.
Well, if it's just a cold, you can still breed her. That is not going to affect anything. Do you know that she will be in season next week?
Becky
It'd be a December foal, unless she runs long.
Next week as in Feb. I'm was counting this one as already here.
Now that's not fair! I resent that.
Does kinda seem like it's out of the blue, you haven't been talking about it recently or why you want a foal when last week you were talking about having too many! :~D To sell? Just for the experience of doing it? What kind of stallion?
Well even with a cold, I don't want to be messed with:') I'll wait til she's over it.
I'm sure you have thought long and hard about breeding. But I have to say this, and it's coming from the voice of experience. It's a big mistake. On several levels, actually. One the expense. Two, I have learned it takes alot more knowledge then I have to raise one right. Three. Yeah their cute, but they are just like pups, they grow up, you can buy one already grown and broke cheaper then you can raise one.
I could go on and on, but I won't:). It just bothers me to see average horse owners breed average horses. It should be left to pros. That's what I've learned, that's why I'm not breeding Rocky and Belle anymore. JMO:)
I wish you luck.
Becky
LOL, well yeah, but then I always look at it, they are horses. If she was in the wild do you think a stud would care if she had a snotty nose:).
Once again, and this is from the voice of experience too and something I've learned, you can't attribute human reaction to horses. They are differnt. And it's not like when they do it it takes forever, it's about a 1 minute event. She'd have to be near death for that to be a problem:)
Becky
. I hear you . I have been planning this for over a year though so it's not out of the blue. I plan to be self employeed from home in < 18 months and have my own place so that not only can I give the two I have (Okie staying) the time I want but this one too. I could wait but the thing about waiting until everything is right often means it doesn't happen. I've always had to make things happen and adjust as I go along.
Yeah, I know. I just don't want to take a sickly horse around someone elses horse. I think the blood work an excellent idea. I've read that miscarriages are common with horses anyway and if putting her on vitamins would give her an edge I can wait another month. I'm going to ask the vet Monday.
I guess I understand wanting to, it's fun to see a baby born and grow up, but I'd have to actually want to own the foal to want to breed one, so that makes me wait till we have room and a reason to take a horse out of use for a year. I'm not in the horse selling business. I do want to breed one someday so ecurbh and I can share that, but not now... not till we have more room for extra horses.
We certainly have a lot of people on the thread that breed horses regularly and we don't give them a raft of crap about why... but they're experienced and made a business or at least serious hobby of it, and they're breeding horses that they believe will be an asset to their breed. SL doesn't have papers so if you breed her to a paint, the foal's resale value will never be very high.
OK - so not everyone has to be in it for the money or the betterment of the breed, and not everyone cares about papers. You just want to have a baby to play with. Again, I can understand this, but it seems to me to be a diversion from doing the things you should want to do as a horse owner. You still haven't been riding much if at all and I think still have trouble with confidence and comfort in the saddle. You haven't been on any trail rides yet, and I think it's too bad for your horsemanship development that you don't want to focus on the riding part of being a horse owner and leave the breeding and training to others, for now, until you have the experience to really know whether a horse is breeding stock and what you want for the foal. IMHO, horsemanship has an element of culture to it, and there's a right way and a right order to do things. When people buck that right way, it doesn't sit well with me.
So there's what I think, not that you asked. :~D
Nothing happening until March now though. I want to make darn sure she doesn't have strangles again and time will tell.
Thanks for taking what I said in the right way.... I'm just tryin' to say what I think is right.
I know that :')
What potential. It's completely gone?
