This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
A good match:')
Well, no pictures today - we've had fires in the area today, (Limestone County TX) too close for comfort. My husband had to go help drive some cattle out of the draw for our neighbor while I set out sprinklers and turned them on at our house. Then I ran next door just in case I had to turn Ranger out of his pen.
Ranger was spooky today and I can't say I blame him. He did come up for his feed, but he was upset by the high winds and the smell of the smoke. All the horses were snorting and puffing and shuffling around; one of the mares from the other pasture got out and decided she needed a snack from the feed shed to combat all this stress; so I had to keep her rounded up until we could get her bridled and led back.
The fire's still burning a little less than a half mile from us, but it looks like they have it under control - all white smoke now, and not billowing up like it was. I'm still going to keep the sprinklers going. The wind has been absolutely beastly here today, and it's going to switch around tonight, so we're hoping it doesn't get going from the other side now...
The voluteer fire depts have been wonderful about getting these fires out, though. I'm thankful no body lost any animals or people today, but I think a lot of hay got burnt up. :P
I would be concerned about the smoke. Is your neighbor moving his horses? Maybe he could take Ranger too.
Good grief. I sure hope it's done in your area. I saw some of the footage of a neighborhood on TV.
True and I wish she would stop that. I thought you said La Grande. Yeah I know where LaGrange is, I can meet you there some time.
I might have. I'm not wearing my glasses.
About 4 hours from here and a skip and hop from you:')
It is pretty down there.
The smoke is going in the other direction now, but it never got bad enough over here to really smell it. At no time could I see the flames, but I could just barely smell the smoke. The horses though could really tell something was wrong - like the teensiest bit of smoke sets off their alarms. It has to be something innate in all these animals around here - the dogs were all howling, the chickens crowing, horses stomping...
The horses have moved themselves deep into the other part of the pasture, upwind from the smoke. If it gets any closer, my neighbor will take Ranger and the others and drive them through the gates into our pasture or our neighboring pastures - some of the have a thousand plus acres to themselves, and then from there they will be rounded up and trailered to be taken out if they need to be. A lot of his horses have been trail riding out in these neighboring pastures, so they know their way around enough to be familiar.
Right now the problem is the wind. It's coming from the North right now, but is expected to do a 180 and come from the South tomorrow... that makes it hard to anticipate which pasture would be the best. This is the forth time in the last four weeks that we've had a fire that threatened us directly or indirectly, and we've seen smoke nearly every other day from the various fires around. It makes it a little hard to know where to move your animals.
At least I know where Ranger is - my kitty wants to hide whenever this happens! And I get I'd just have to turn the chickens out of the coop and shoo them into the trees where they could at least fly away. Getting all the animals - dogs, cats, chickens horses - out is such a priority... and we're going to be under "red flag" fire conditions for the next week at LEAST.
Have you had any problems with fire out there?
My husband just bought a corvette.

Stay safe:)

Wow! Pictures!
Oh boy, praying no fire comes near you and yours. Having to evacuate for fire is really frightening.
:) Go ahead - tell me it's red. That's what Bob's Triumph is.
He bought this last week.
Becky
It surely is pretty :) The truck is nice too.
Looks super spiffy!
The Ranger's cool too... just like ours.
Nice:')
Okie got 3 skinned places last week. When I went to doctor him today one was very dark. I scrubbed it and thought it was adipose (fat). It looked bumpy. Suddenly the outer broke off to clear skin. It wasn't a scab or dirt but was like a piece of skin intact. I've never seen this in humans. Weird.
Hope the easement will be in your favor.
The rain has quit here but it is turning cold now.....
