The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think an on farm lease is a pretty good stipulation if you want to keep an eye on him. I think that you should keep all of the requirments that you want in the ad, just don't be nannyish about it, like Hair said. Lots of people will want to jump on a free lease. (I know that I would) and you want to make sure that they're serious about it. The show requirement might be a bit much if you haven't kept him as a show horse in the first place. That was one of the requirements for my lease, (not free) and let me tell you, it really stunk.

I saw that storm on radar. I think we caught the other end of it. It came out of nowhere. It was nice listening to the wind last night.

There was a "easement" disclaimer. Maybe something to do with that.

Thanks Beaker. After stipulations agreed on I don't think I would be a problem unless I needed to be but no show or time requirements:')I think , unless the just right kid (and parent) comes along, I'll just sell or keep him though. This lease business sounding more and more like a headache for an owner.

I looked up the pyrantel pamoate but have never heard it recommended down here........which probably means its a good wormer! ;)

Heh... what does that mean?

Hair, it means that they recommend and sell so many products down here, all really expensive and none of them really do the job. The ones that do (Quest Plus Gel , for example) are marked by such rumor and innuendo of "unsafe, deadly", etc. I cant help but believe half of these wormers are pharmeceutical scams. And I love the pharm. companies but they sure take us horse owners for suckers......because we are. Anything for our precious babies. Ya know?

We just use a single dose on everything.

Duchess, last question. For bots or strongyles? Or both?

Good Morning.

Cindy,
This lease business sounding more and more like a headache for an owner.

Why? You still own the horse, he has the same care, gets ridden and you don't have the bills. Sounds sweet to me. Just get in all in writing. We have leased a couple of show horses. Same situation as you, owners didn't have time, but didn't want to sell.

Dang gone, I didn't check thread last night. Missed kitties and 'ole Cowboys! Have to check them out when I get home.

You and Hair both brought up good points. Beaujon, you with the fecal sample and Hair with the, "I have never seen any worms". A fecal examination is the best way to find out what type of worms you horse might have. Why keep hitting with poison if they don't need it? The present of the bot fly and egg lava on the legs are an indication of stomach bots. But, unless you test the fecal sample, you will not know for sure what they have.

I agree 100% about the pharm, companies taking advantage, and pushing a product with scare tactices.

The vet I use to use that died, was always very honest (I think:) about telling it like it was. I believe what he told me was true because so much of it has come true. Like with the West Nile vacine. He recommended for horses around here NOT be vacineated. He said right out the pharm company that developed it was pushing it with scare tactices. We've had very few horses get it around here, and the funny thing alot of them that did get it had been vacinated. He also said he felt there were some side effects that were not being warned about. I didn't ask for specifics. I also asked the owner of my feed store about the new fad of worming for tape worms in horses. He told me around here it's usually not a problem, that if you have a horse that is a hard keeper here, you might want to worm for tapes, but otherwise don't worry about it.

It's was also something you don't see on the worm packages about that your type of pasture, the number of horses you have per acre, etc, determines how often you worm. It aggravates me that like on Zimectrin on the package I think the recommendation is every 3 months. But they don't mention that that's under an ideal circumstance. Every vet I've talked to says horses that are dry lotted need to be wormed every month. I think the expense I have on wormers is made up in the fact that my horses make it on the smallest amounts of feed that is reccommended on the packages, and even now, I think Harley has gotten a little too plump:) It makes them easy keepers if you keep the worms down.

Why keep hitting with poison if they don't need it?

That's exactly what the old vet told me about the daily wormers. He said the benefits do not out weight the stress you put on the horses liver, from a constant flow of poison thru it. Good point.

I test mine every year when I have their yearly stuff done.

You may know this but a bot worm is the only one you can SEE with your eyes, and if you SEE them in manure the horse has them bad. The rest have to be spotted with a microscope.

Good morning:)

Windy and cold here today. I'm canceling riding. No sense in it since it's going to warm right back up tomorrow. I need to do housework anyway:(

The kitty pictures were great, especially the white one trying to find the cob webs:)

LOL, when I first got horses, I was forever kicking their poop around looking for worms, till someone was kind enough to tell me I wouldn't see anything even if they were full, except for bots. I can't remember which horse it was we had, but I saw them one time. I always worm a horse as soon as I bring it home with an ivermectec. I always check their poop the next day. That particular horse I found some dead ones. They look like grub worms. EEEWWWWWWWWW.

...but many had a hard time not seeing Agent Smith in Elrond...

THAT was his name! I couldn't really get past it either. He just LOOKS evil to me. Oh and it wasn't Pippin who's in LOST, but Merri. I had a hard time keeping them straight but I'm sure when I watch it a few more times it'll stick. The guy who played Boromir has been a bad guy in quite a few movies too. The most recent one I saw was a James Bond flick where he played an agent gone bad. He has the looks for that kinda roll. Anyways, I finished them all about 11:30 last night. Since I started watching about 2pm that was kind of a movie marathon but it was good. I got up and started getting ready for work this morning and had to go lay down several times so I thought maybe I'd wait another day. I may watch the special features disks today.

A marathon indeed :~D We've tried to do that often and rarely succeeded in getting all the way through. You have the special features? Oh - I thought you said you had the theatrical editions..

Hope you feel better after today, with another day off.
