This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good afternoon dandelion :~D
Some people do leave halters on, particularly if they're hard to catch, but I wouldn't.
Like Becky said, it's really risky, especially with a baby. They'll be tempted to itch it, and either get it hung up on something, get a foot in it, or put their eye out.
Besides, getting them to let you halter them is half the lesson ;~D
As well it should with a baby. It's an old cowboy thing... from breakin in wild horses that you'd never catch again otherwise.
Duchess, when you use panacur, do you use the Power Pac or a single dose? In other words, how much do you use for how many days? (Most people use that or Safeguard in double dose for 3-5 days.) It kills strongyles, right?
Hair, that's a new one on me. Where I used to live we would only worm if there was a problem. Here it's like every 8 weeks. For tapes we use Equimax. I looked up the pyrantel pamoate but have never heard it recommended down here........which probably means its a good wormer! ;)
Well that explains it. We've got a boatload of old cowboys around here - and a lot of younger ones too...
Come to think of it, the landscaping around here is pretty appealing if you're a gal - especially if you like cowboys :)
Makes it kinda hard to objectively evaluate the words of the cute young and old cowboys saying them!
Heh... what does that mean?
Frog, you too with the pyrantel pamoate? For tapes? Interesting. I'm a big fan of jeffers. ;) Also check out country supply and chicks saddlery. The money I spend on wormers, fecal tests, vet bills, etc. is getting ridiculous. That's why I'm asking you ladies. and I really appreciate all the advice. I still dont know what to do but I DONT think I'm going to be following the drug companies recommendations. I'm getting a little sick of their constant product pushing.
People around here will tell you that they leave the halter and lead rope on to catch the little critters but you shouldn't have to "catch" them in my opinion. I was trained to always take mine off. mine stand still and lower their head but they had to be taught. There was a colt one night that was running loose in the barn. I put him back up and tried to take his halter off. He freaked.
Well, you mentioned some familiarity with the difference between cowboy ways and 'new' ways. Here's a difference. Some of the cowboy ways are fine, but in your case, I wouldn't do it with this foal. Too easy for him to hurt his neck, or hang it up on something, and have a real setback in learning to tie, because he will pull till he breaks loose.
I understand it with grown mustangs. Not a good idea with babies that aren't expendable if they get hurt.
Thank you all for your worming advice. I hope I got all of you. Anything else you want to add, feel free. I think in the south they are going after bots. I'm getting sick of the whole thing! Every 8 weeks........sheesh!
Hope you get to feeling better.
We do it every 8 weeks too... I think that's pretty common.
Who? :')
I do let mine graze with me close by with the lead rope on though
We just use a single dose on everything.
It sounds like the old guy at the property knows what he's doing so you might give him a chance.
We leave halters on the babies for a period of time. Until they will come up and stand to get halters, they stay on. Warning here though...There is always someone here to keep an eye on things, they are never put on loose enough to catch anything in (which means they have to be checked daily so they aren't too tight)and we always have a knife in our pockets.
Ask 10 horsemen a question, get 12 answers :~D
As 2J would say... How long have we been friends?
Kittens on barn adventure...
Looking in places mouses hide :~D
Pippin says "Hi! I'm ~covered~ in cobwebs and I don't care!"
Tweek says "Ack! me too!" (she's trying figure out where the invisible cobwebs are coming from, she can feel them on her face)
Got the barn all tidy! Kittens are 'xhausted. Good day :~D
