This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I lurk here all the time, but being on the list is helpful - especially when hot issues come up (the Doggie Ping list did a great job getting the word out on Diamond Pet Foods recall, for instance).
Besides, if I screw this up I can at least serve as a warning to others:

I assumed her car insurance. She told me she was covered. I'll check with my agent today. It might sound like it but I'm really not leasing the trailer. I was letting her use it for free occasionally and she told me she gave me a discount because I do. Even if she hadn't she would still be using it. It does show on my statement though. I better check it out.

I was reading that there is a vaccine for strangles now. I'm not sure how affective it is though.
Good Morning. Back to the old grind for me today. What a welcome back, no heat! Good thing I have my long johns on, as it is cold in here even with the heat on. If I was in school, they would send us home. :')

Good Morning, and welcome to the saddle club! I didn't chime in on the previous night's conversation, but you received some very good advice. What you do with it, is your decision. Hopefully, things will work out well for you.

Cindy's post to you about going somewhere to stock up made me think of something the owner of my feed store told me.
Stocking to much at your house, or buying from some place that sells really cheap may mean they are stocking up because it is cheaper to buy in huge bulk. BUT you run the risk of it getting bugs, mice, and just loosing some of it's nutritional value just from sitting to long.
The fresher you can buy it the better for the horses. That's one of the reasons I only buy a week at a time, even then I occasionally will have a mouse hole i the bottom of the last bag. I believe the owner of my feed store keeps his stuff rotated very well, and it's always as fresh as he can make it. He orders every week. And only keeps on hand about the amounts he sells each week.

My horses are dry lotted too. It costs me $67.50 per horse per month. About in the middle of yours.

Yes, that is the trainer in the picture. Hard to believe he got on her already after one week. Daughter had her used to a saddle, so that part was done. He said he would have her cantering by next week. The plan was for 30 days, then the daughter can finish her.
That's good if she was ready to go... I guess there wasn't much else to do but get on :~D

Good Mornin' Hair! I've been cooped up with the flu all weekend and am still home today but I feel well enough to do a lilttle FReeping to catch up.
That was a nice picture of the little VW Bug. I learned to drive in one just like it. Same color and everything. It was a '62 and my Dad bought it new. I didn't inherit it until '75 but it sure was a fun little car and I abused the heck out of it but it just kept on running. I sure with I still had it. One of these days I'm gonna get a convertible bug. I don't know why, but I just want one.
I just have one more comment to make concerning the questions you asked. Please remember almost everything you read here is opinion, and you will ALWAYS find people who will disagree with a stated opinion:) You just have to find what works for you, and have the confidence in your own common sense, that you have researched a question and formed an educated decision on what YOU believe works.
Having said that, IMO:), when looking for a trainer, one of the first things I would ask on thier technique would be when doing round pen work(which is the first step in breaking therefore very important in establishing your place in the horses mind about who is in control), do they use a lunge line or do they free lunge. This is a pretty hot topic around here:). My opinion on that is set in concrete:). Do not use a trainer who free lunges(.) I believe this is a very important. If you want to get into the particulars of why I believe that, we can. But right now suffice to say, the problem with free lunging is it does not teach a horse who is in control, and in my opinion ANY TIME you put a halter on a horse, he needs to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is NOT in control but the person on the other end.
IMO, the minute you put a halter on a horse, his relax time, fun time, is over and it's time to work. Horses CANNOT be run around enough in a round pen to "wear them out" and they do not need to "get the tickle out" before they can be ridden, they need to know when the halter goes on, play time is OVER.

Oh no! Missed your ride this weekend. I hope your feel better soon.
I've used it. I understand it's 50% effective. Most people dont give it anymore. I only do when/if my horses have to be moved to a place where other strange horses are coming and going.
