The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The books were hardbacks. I still have some of them. I used to get 3 or 4 boxes every year.

I paid less than that for both of ours!

Honestly, I think mom would be a great horse, but he won't sell her. We did ask about the others, but they were not to be sold. He's got an older pure white gelding (also NOT for sale) that is to DIE for, he is just gorgeous. And well mannered, too...

Wish I had one of those when I first came home. That would have helped my walking quite a bit. Oh well, this week I return to a wheelchair for long distance walks.
Guess you won't be chasing any cows or riding any time soon. :(
Sorry to hear you are not mobile, and I hope that this matter will be resolved quickly for you. I spent a couple of weeks recently in a wheelchair and it was not fun. I had a friend who's only means of transportation was a wheelchair as he was a paraplegic. We left the pub once day and decided to take a short cut through the park. He spied a 'copper' and decided to 'chase' him with his motorized chair all over the park. I had to talk the irate policeman out of booking him for being drunk and disorderly in a wheelchair! LOL

Over here he would have been ticketed for DUI. There was a guy arrested in N Texas for driving a lawn mower on the side of the road. He was in high spirits:')

I think that if I can get some unvarnished opinions from you guys I will do a lot better.

Hello. Does that mean you still want on the ping list?

Hey there. When we were trail riding a lot, we fed Purina 100 mixed with race horse oats. The feed store that handled Purina closed down, and we now get our feed from Sam's. Performance Horse Feed, $5.70/50#. 12% protein. Horses are doing very well on it.

BTW, daughter went to see Biscuit. I gave her the camera, but the pictures didn't come out too well. This is about the best one. She is doing real well.

Would it save you any money to make a distance trip to stock up at a better buy?

I don't think I'd save any money due to the distance I'd have to go. The prices I pay are pretty consistant for Carson City, Reno and Fallon. I'd have to go a couple hundred miles I think to get cheaper prices. Bob is going to ask WalMart if they will carry Strategy - they do carry Equine Senior and it's a couple of dollars cheaper there.

My stable bill went up 40 dollars a horse last month due to energy and feed. That's too much to absorb. I think she would have done better to go up slowly in small increments. All it makes me do is want to move. It's going to have to be really bad for me to stall them because now it's 7.50 a night per horse.

With my high prices here - $8.00 bale for hay, $12.00 per 50lb bag feed minimum, I figured that it costs me $53 to $86 per month per horse to feed them. Remember, all my horses are on dry lot - no pasture at all here.

That gives you some idea of what it costs her to keep your horse per month.

That is a lot. I went from 180 a month to 220 to pasture. She's giving me 40 off though for using my trailer. This month it was 525 for 2 horses( plus my trailer) because of bad waether. She grows her own hay but I know the feed costs.

Have you thought about training and giving riding lessons? My trainer says thats her profit money. The money a lot but that isn't what is bothering me though. I don't have the time to ride both horses like I need to be doing and I'm paying a lot of money to let them lay up in a hotel:'(

We do some training - or did for awhile, and occassionally board horses. Also give riding lessons though those are free :) Right now, don't want any new horses coming in. Three mares are pregnant and there is an outbreak of strangles about 100 miles away. Plus, just no real room for anymore right now when we are going to have to open up the stalls for foaling and some of our barn horses will have to go out for awhile.

Who is paying the insurance on your trailer - nosy question I know, but what happens if she gets in a wreck - who is liable?
