The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning.

Last day of vacation for me. :(
Sure went fast. I didn't get much accomplished, but at least got some rest.

Rest is good! You aren't supposed to accomplish things on a vacation, otherwise it would be a "working vacation" and who wants one of those?

I thought I remembered straps on Charlies but I wasn't for sure. It just makes sense. what would be the point if they didn't stay in place, if they are suppose to keep you dry when riding.

I hear y'all might get a break in the rain over the weekend. Your eye's won't know what to think when they finally see the sun.

LOL:)

Hey I was wondering about your horses feet, this morning when I read you're still getting rain. Has the farrier been there since this all started? Has he commented about what all the rain and mud is doing to their feet? Does all the moisture make them grow faster?

With the lack of rain we are having, my horses feet are hard as rocks, and not growing much. Now I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. I do know when we have a lot of rain days in a row, and the horses feet stay wet, we run the risk of thrush. I wondered if you ever have that problem?

Oh heck, I guess I forgot to push the send button. I forgot what it was, nothing important.

Heck... ~we're~ getting fungus in all this damp ;~D But the farrier was here last week and said their feet all looked great, no fungus. I worry particularly about fungus on Bay because he has the pads on.

Horses that are out 24/7 in this and don't have a good dry shelter certainly do live with a certain amount of thrush all winter. Ours don't, I think because they're in at night and their feet throughly dry out every day. Same for their skin. I think they run into problems not so much from getting wet, but from ~staying~ wet for days on end.

I don't think they are necessarily growing faster, but they do get soft if they stay wet.

LOL...well, douse yourself with Koppertox:), you will look like the Grinch, but you won't have fungus:)

That makes sense about letting them get dried out completely every day. I guess that would be a draw back to letting them have free choice to go in and out. Rocky would stay dry, but every other horses I've had, seems to not mind being wet and slopping around in the mud.

And I think it makes a difference that they stay in for long enough at a time to dry. If they have free choice here, they'd stay in a couple hours at a time maybe, but not all night.

Bay has free choice, and when it's nice he'll wander at night, but he's been staying in as long as the mares are lately.

Frog, I forgot to mention yesterday, that when i went to groom Harley to ride, I pulled 2 ticks off his chest:(. I very seldom have them on the horses, and never this time of year, but this may have happend because I haven't had to spray them for flies. I think that stuff repels ticks too.

LOVELY!

It's raining here today. Just a narrow squall line though. It's supposed to blow on outta here by tomorrow. I plan on riding again on Sunday. There's a Cowboys for Christ trail ride on Saturday, starting at noon at the rails-to-trails, but I've got an "after-the-fact" wedding reception to go to at 4 so I'd never be able to make it back in time. Sunday's supposed to be the nicer of the two days anyways so it suits me just fine. I need to do some work around the house and the barn anyways.

That's ok. I just got home. There was a wreck about a mile from my house. I had to detour thru town.

I let it get dark on me tonight. I have to walk Sarah Lee back thru a lane that's fenced on both sides. She was high alert. I assured her that I wasn't going to let anything "get" her. When we got to the gate I went thru and cued her to come in. She sat back on me. She's never done that before. I got to looking and "what the hell?" They put a hot wire across the gate. I have no idea how I opened the gate without getting shocked but I did, and walked right under it and tried to get her to walk into it. Some protector lol. She saw it !
