The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She wants her husband to ride with her. But from what she has said, he doesn't want to, so now she has decided she doesn't even want him to, this will be something she does for herself.

It's so funny that she trusts the one she does ride...I don't like him. He was throwing a fit tied to the trailer while she was leading the other to the arena. I think the only reason she finally bonded with him was he was the ONLY thing she had, it was ride him or not ride. With this new one she's got a choice. You know how hard it is to adjust to a new horse. I don't like doing it, but I can. I guess she can't.

Pretty can kill you as quick as ugly:)..The most important thing to consider when buying a horse is how well they behave, looks and color are secondary.

Well, I have to tell you I am dreading having to find a horse to replace Bay when Bay needs to retire.

Heh, Harley even jumped around a bit as we were riding around the end of the arena past the horse. More then he's ever jumped around before. Julia was like, maybe we should get off. I'm like hell no, I'm not getting off. That starts really bad habits and besides it wasn't all that bad at all, just more then he had ever done before...I don't know what got in him, a few taps on the bit and dropped his head back down, but you could tell he was still alert:)

I know, that's why I finally decided to stop the buying them to resale. It's not worth it. I'm sticking to one horse, period. Barring anything drastic Harley could be the last horse I'll ever need:)

The trick to confidence for me is getting to the point with a horse where you know the worst they'll do and you know you can handle it.

Bay's not always good, sometimes he blows and snorts and dances... He'd have fussed about leading the other horse away from the trailer, but I know exactly what's in him and what he's capable of, and I know how to make him tick. If he snorts, I can chuckle and make him dance by whatever it was, he's not gonna freak out from under me.

You're probably at that place with Harley now.... and perhaps she's at that place with hers.

What a lovely horse! If Grandpa looks anything like this then he's a real beauty. I'm sure his "horsenality" is even better. ;o)

Don't stop! Not sick! I appreciate it...

It does look healthy.... not so bad at all any more! Lots of improvement every time. That big flap of skin in the first one still makes me shudder.

Oh, that is so much better. Don't stop posting them, It's interesting to watch it heal. Does he limp on it at all? Is it sore to the touch?

It really is too bad that your friend is so afraid like that. But as long as she trusts the other one that she already has, I guess that's all that matters. Serious question... has she ever taken a tumble from him? Was the other horse good under saddle?

He doesn't limp a bit, but it's still tender. He tolerates me rubbing antibiotic ointment on it fairly well as long as I don't rub too hard. It's still got a pretty good size knot down below it on the cannon bone that seems to be touchier than anything. You can see it fairly well in the last picture. He doesn't want me messing with that at all. I wonder if it's some kind of inflammation of the bone and if it'll eventually go down when the wound completely heals. We'll see I guess.

Must make him a little tricky to trim and shoe on that side.

That's what I thought too, and it did the first time, just because you were afraid that you were going to touch it, but it's down below the bend so he doesn't mind bending it.
