The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, I guess the high fire danger is still on for today. Lots of wind:(.

I'm getting ready to go saddle my horse. I'll get pictures of what it looks like out in the woods. I didn't realy pay attention last time, but I'm anxious to see how barren/or not it is out there. If it's just haveing the horses that has devastated my property so bad.

Might be hard to tell from all the leaves.

Becky, I swear, when people ask me what I'm doing, I tell them I'm watching grass grow! And I mean it. I put down 200 lbs of rye grass before these rains and I haven't seen anything so exciting in ages. lol. Evidently neither has my gelding since he jumped a 4 foot field fence to get into the paddock- and he's not a jumper!

you've got to try rye grass it's fantastic. lol.

ok, I've finally lost my mind.v;)

My family use to laugh at me because every morning in the summer, I tell them about twice a day I have to go out and take a stroll around the pasture to see how much the grass has grown:), So I understand.

Do you know, will the rye grass come back year after year on it's own?

Becky

We have had a lot of rain the past few days. Temps in 40's, but so dark and cloudy,

And you don't even live in Michigan! (same here)

No, it won't. Rye is like wheat. You have to sow it every year. It makes good quick winter pasture but it dies off in the summer. Lots of people over-seed it on their bermuda grass to give the horses something to eat when the bermuda goes dormant. By the time the rye dies out, the bermuda has come back out.

Becky, the rye grass does not come back every year, you have to plant it. :( There is a perennial but it's more trouble than its worth. You must plant the rye though, it's so green and gorgeous. And how can you beat watching it come up from seed every single %$&* year! ;) Oh, and dont forget the expense ($24.00/ 50 lb. 50-100 lbs/ acre.) But it's cheaper than hay and so much better for the little dears. ;)

I found a picture that looked somewhat like Grandpa. I am going to post it.

This looks about like him, except he has a sorrel mane and a blaze.

Rode today. Julia brought her new one, but he ran around and bucked so much in the arena when we riding out that she decided she couldn't deal with him, and he's for sale. She just wants to keep the one horse that she rides. I think that's the best thing for her to do. I don't think the horse was being bad, just running and bucking a bit. Here's a few pictures. It is really dry out there. You can see how shallow the creek is, it barley covers the horses feet.

Ah - thanks for the pics!

You mean he was just turned out in your arena and she was upset that he ran and bucked loose when you left?

Whew... yeah - if she's comfortable with the one horse she's got, better to not upset that apple cart.

Was it a good ride? She's smiling!

Yep. She says the one she rode NEVER bucks, even when he's loose in the pasture. I tried to tell her, at first, that just because a horse bucks when it's loose doesn't mean it will when she rides it. But she is just to afraid, she needs to sell him.

I brought her in the house and showed her some of the pictures of Rusty and Harley bucking, she can't believe I ride them:).

Yeah it was a good ride, We climb alot of hills. I think that's a good way to get alot of good exercise in a short time. I'm riding again tomorrow and will go on some flat trails so I can trot and lope a little.

Dang - that's just what I was gonna recommend you do!

Well, bless her heart. At least she does trust the one she has. What was inspiring her to look for another one in the first place?

Yes I forgot to mention he was an appaloosa. Sorry! Slick, grandpa's pasture pal, is the most beautiful horse I have ever seen in person. He has a wavy white mane and----off topic there----anyway, grandpa is not the most beautiful horse, but he's the best!
