This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
How about a medicated shampoo for the allergies? And maybe a blood test to find out what his allergies are to? UC Davis will do it, we found that Sonny is allergic to a lot of the feed we were giving him.
Yeah, now that you mention it, it does. She's got more white than that but you can't see it for the saddle. I didn't think she was taller than my old gelding, Tennessee, but she either is or my legs are getting shorter because I had to find a hill to get up on her. You can see in the picture of me standing beside her that the stirrup is about even with my elbow, and I'm 5'7". The guys were laughing at me, but they have to do it too. Their horses aren't all that tall, they're just old-er. I can't make too much run of them either though coz I'm headed that way myself. ;o)
Do his allergies get any better in the winter, when there aren't any more bugs?
Good grief. There was no reason for that driver to be that way. Was it the cowboy? He was inside whining about someone he brought in on the bus from Dallas.
We've tried everything short of the allergy testing that you had done. Texas A&M is the closest place to take Tuffy that will do that type of tests.
He does get better in winter but he still scratches. In summer, without the steroid, he frantically runs from tree to tree, fencepost to fencepost, scratching. He won't even hardly stop to eat. It's been getting worse every summer for the last 3 years.
You might talk to your vet. I had a dog allergy tested. Instead of doing it on the animal they were able to work with the blood. The vet sent the samples to A & M overnight instead of taking the dog there. It worked great for us. They even overnight the medications when we need refills.
The vet did mention doing something like that but he said it didn't have a high rate of success. I told him I would like to at least try it before I make a 4 hour drive to College Station.
I just read through your post about the bus ride. You should report that SOB for talking to you like that. You sure as heck didn't owe that creep an apology.
Another thing we did was add missing link to the diet. Our dog improved with medication but it did not stop the symptoms. The improvements were noticeable in a week. No more itching, chewing, abrasions or ear infections. We have even stopped the medication injections. I know dogs and horses are different, but they make missing link for horses also, it might be worth a try.
What is missing link?
LOL I didn't realize you were that tall - I'd need a ladder.
I was able to get my vet to take the required blood test and send it off, didn't have to take Sonny in for the testing.
I'll try it, thanks for the suggestion.
I'll be in touch with my vet today, I hope he can do that.
How much of it do you feed each day? I saw the 5lb and 12lb bags but didn't see any feeding instructions.
You just gotta love her. She put her personal touch on on this weekend with some of those pictures.
Hello! We got some rain here today. I hope we get more.
Pictures? Somebody say pictures? Funny, I don't see any and I know I remember somebody saying that pictures were coming... ;o)
according to the instructions on the bag:
weight up to 500 lbs is 1/4 cup daily
weight from 500 to 1000 lbs is 1/3 cup daily
weight over 1000 lbs is 1/2 cup daily
