The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I never watched the My Friend Flicka series but have seen the movie a million times.

Ladies, the bird died. It was still alive this morning but didn't look good, it's eyes were all goopy and closed. It just died a few minutes ago. Oh well.

Chin up. You did the best you could.

I would have a shelter pick him up to figure out what was wrong with him though.

Believe it or not my old vet that died, reccommended echinaceia to build Rusty's immune system. I think I broke open 5-6 capsules in each feeding. I don't know if it helps, but I don't think it hurts. That's what people take it for.

sorry about the bird, but you tried.

I loved Fury and My Friend Flicka too as a kid:). Was the boy that played in Fury the same one that played in The Rifleman?

I might have spelled it wrong. Do you know what I'm talking about???? You buy it at Walmart over where they sell vitamins.

Oh, I didn't spell it wrong, it's just an herb. I know alot of people who take it to help get over colds. Google it, you'll get alot of info on why People take it. My vet says it worked the same in horses.

Rusty had so many issues, it's hard to tell if it helped or not:). The longer I had him the healthier he seemed to get overall. But there were alot of things that could have contributed to that. Like I say, it's hard to tell, but I don't think it will hurt at all. It's just an herb.

That didn't type the way I meant it. Of course it was helping or you wouldn't have been giving it:') I meant, did he get any colds?

I'm wondering what makes you think she has a cold. Horses can get snotty noses and runny eyes from allergies. Rocky gets runny eyes pretty frequently when it's windy. With the weather as crazy as it's been, we're at 74 today and very windy and very dry, maybe it's more that with her then a cold????? Just a thought.

It's a dull thick white snot. It drips out or she hacks it on the ground. Her eyes look good. She's a little tender at her nodes though. I usually walk her out of the pasture with just my hand under her neck. Today she kind of moved away from my hand and I had to put the halter on. It's not slowing her down a bit though. She did this a couple of days a month or so ago. Of course it's going around. Horses susectable to pneumonia are on penicillin. Mine are vaccinated for it though. Most clearing up on their own in a few days. I don't want to put her on antibiotics if it's viral. Our weather is so screwed up. When we dropped to the 30's they didn't have winter coats. Today it's in the 80's and brushing out .

She does get allergies though. During the summer I had problems with her eyes red and draining all the time. The fly mask worked better than the eye ointment though. Covering her eyes cleared it right up.

My husband forced me to put the bird in plastic bags and put it in the freezer until we can get it checked. Luckily, I keep a fridge/freezer in my barn for cold drinks, I put it out there.

Tuffy has allergies so bad it's not even funny. He's fine right now, since it's an insect allergy that he has problems with, but I have him on tons of supplements. He's on HisTall for coughing, flax to help him with the reaction to the bugs, farrier's formula for his crappy feet, I'll put him back on spirulina before spring and I'm going to start him on an antioxident before spring. It's called Phyto Quench or something.

Bobby Diamond was Joey (my hearthrob)
Johnny Crawford was Mark McCain in The Rifleman.

Got lots of fires up there today? We have one nearby, I can smell it and see the smoke, but I don't see fire. There was a story on the news about a cattle stampede in Oklahoma, on account of a fire.

Well I'm going to check out what's in the one Becky used. I just have to be careful. I don't want her on anything with biotin. She gets a "make me"attitude and then I have to.

Was there an immunity builder for colds in there? Can I just feed her oranges? :')
