The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I like to save jail for people who are a threat to the public, people who would rob my house or prey on others. I think we over-use jail for some stuff we shouldn't, costing money and taking space from people who really need to be taken out of society for good.. But that's just me.

He's got a spot on the top of his head and one eye that looks a little funny, but nothing that looks serious.

I thought about West Nile but I just don't know anything about hawks. What about rabies, birds don't get that, do they?

We offered him some turkey but he didn't eat it. I didn't think about water (duh) the kids are out there right now giving him some. Thanks for the reminder.

Wow that's amazing. I'd let him sit in the dog kennel for now. Be careful with those birds. My trainer had a hawk for quite some time, as she does falconry regularly, and they will not hesitate to tear your face up.

Welcome to the thread, and we look forward to having you here! Our horses and pictures are at the top of the thread, and there's many throughout.

None of us have been doing too much riding this winter... glad someone is!

He needs a mouse. Got a mouse in the barn?

It's a tiny little kennel that the little yorkie poops in. She's a lousy farm dog so when she goes outside, she has to be penned up.

Bad thing about leaving him in there loose, my cats can climb fences and they are all standing around, watching, waiting....for someone to look away....

How about a stall in the barn? are they solid on the bottom and open on top? Can they get in there?

Do hawks carry West Nile? All of my horses have been vaccinated but I'd hate to take that chance. Oh, I could put him in my tack room!

When my cats were kittens they could get into the stall between the rails on top, I think they are all too big now. The fronts of the stalls are on concrete so no, nothing could get under.

Thanks, Beaker. I think I'll tell my daughter to stop handling him.

It's too bad you had to switch! I Absolutely LOVE western! Although, if it ended up not being enough of a challenge, I would switch. I would want to jump.

How about rabbit meat. Have anything like that? Oh and as far as the cats go, I'd be more worried about them getting hurt than the bird.

I don't think that birds get rabies and I've not heard of a hawk with west nile but it sounds like he's injured. Hopefully not bad and he'll recover enough to fly off.

Hugs to your kids for taking care of him :)

I think it's true that if the hawk is at all perky a cat might have a fight on his hands... It'd be a bad scene regardless :~D

Thanks for the list, I didn't know that - sigh, more to watch out for.

TV News just said sustained winds on the mountain peaks of 117 mph, gusts to 170 mph. Warnings for the flooded areas that trees may come down with the wind.

Good grief! Are you feeling wind like that where you are? I guess I'll stop complaining about our soggy boring greyness as bad weather.

Indeed it would be. They go after small dogs, that's for sure. We were on a trail ride once when one came out of nowhere and attacked Ellie, my trainer's dachshund. I bet the bird is saying "Here Kitty Kitty" as we speak! :-)
