The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The one tie up I saw was the little paint mare you've seen me on. She locked up and wasn't going anywhere, till the vet got there. After injected Bute, she was immediately comfortable to walk again, and she was turned out and allowed to move. Other than having very dark pee that day, I don't think she had any problems after that.

Boy - I don't have a water trough heater - always thought they were pretty extravagant unless you have a lot of freezing weather... (I'd rather have a hose heater). But after a few days of hauling hot water out, I sure think they'd be neat!

If you don't have a good mulch rake, you need one prolly!

I think you're gonna have to decide this one :~D

I think I'll just get both:). My need of a muke rake just came about because of all the new dirt Mack put in the stalls. Before they were hard packed and I didn't pick up anything but the poop. Now with the loose dirt it's hard to do that. I don't want to shovel back out what Mack put in.

The farrier just left. He said Harley hadn't grown enough to shoe all around. He would have had to put the nails back i the same holes. He put the one back on and rescheduled me for the 31st. He said none of the horses he's been working on lately have grown much.

You mean muck rake? Pitch fork? Ah - I was thinking mulch rake like a leaf rake.

I think you need both... that seems the only solution :~D

Ugh - I need to go put the horses out and clean stalls... I need to go down to my friend Kay's this afternoon and help her paint her daughter's room... and put up some kind of a wallpaper mural of horses running :~D

I've only seen it happen a few times myself. One case was really really severe. It was at a competition. The owner thought the horse was colicing and was walking him. I tried to tell him it wasn't colic and he shouldn't be walking him, but he insisited it was colic. When the vet got there sure enough it was a tie up and he was told he shouldn't have been walking him. They took the horse into the clinic and I never heard how he came out.

I'm glad to learn you can move them once they've been medicated.

I'm surprised he was even able to walk him. Taffy would not.... ~could not~ move at all until she was Buted. And while we didn't know what it was, we called the vet. You could tell she was just stiff and hard all over, like all her muscles were clenched at the same time.

Well this poor horse didn't want to walk. It was sad. The owner was an ass. Cowboy type. He was a first time competitior, and did the trail like it was a race, and he did the open class which was 30 miles. He was bragging at camp how long he had to wait at the 2 mile marker to keep from getting in too early. I felt bad for the horse, but thought the guy deserved to be shown up, after all the bragging he was doing about the horse. It was a good horse, it just had not been conditioned for what he was asked to do. There is a big difference in being inshape to rope and being inshape to do 30 miles, especially at the pace he claimed he went.

Well, I'm sorry his horse had to pay for it, but it's good when occasionally a guy like that is shown, without question, that he didn't know "jack". Too often, they get away with it, due only to the horse's willing nature, endurance, and ability to tolerate pain, and those idiots continue to think they're right.

Our horses are very willing to let us be stupid... That's why it's important for us to remember to be looking out for them. :~D

My thoughts exactly.

Well you have fun hanging wall paper:), I'm going to go get Harley saddled, and maybe take a turn around the arena.

See you later.

Darn...I got out on the trails today and realized I'd left my camera sitting on the fender of my trailer:(. But we had a nice ride. About 1 1/2 hours, and I did about 30 minutes in the arena before Julia got here. So Harley had a good first day out again after his vacation. And he was great. Not one problem.

I have to agree. When you don't have something is generally when you need it the most.

Hehe. In my experience, the horse lets you know right away if you've been stupid. Especially with idiots like that fellow.

Hey have you heard any news about the Bixby boy that was lost last night? I haven't been able to catch any news about him, other then my farrier told me this morning that he still hadn't been found yet as of this morning. I missed the evening news and was just wondering about him.

Yeah. I'm going to EC Friday or Sat and he's going to take me to see her. Want to go? If Eddie goes to Florida I'm going land looking Friday.
