The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yours is far more proper, that I'll admit. :-) Hey, this is off topic, but I'm thinking of gifting my dad with the Lord of the Rings movie set.

Well, I'd surely recommend them to anyone with taste for such things! Get the extended editions... they're worth it both for the added content in the films and the background supplemental features.

No, but it was entertaining to watch until they brought the tree down. One year someone opened the packages for me.. that were on the kitchen table. Now we decorate above five feet. You know the dust particles you see when you look at a ray of sunlight through a window? She ate a hole in the sheetrock one time chasing the dust.

Beaker, I've ridden with ShakeNJake and she really knows her dressage stuff! I wish we lived closer together so I could take some lessons from her. As a matter of fact, some of the training tricks she taught me, I taught my daughter and they also worked for her.

From what she has written, I'm sure that she does! :-) I'm happy that there's another dressage person on the thread. I think that Hair did dressage at one point too...

And PS, I love your tagline. I've been meaning to comment on it. How're your filly and Tuffy doing?

No I'll be riding by myself. Julia never called back and she has to know the night before because she can't hook up her trailer. Her husband has to do it.

I'll take my camera tho, and get some pictures of the back of Harleys ears:)

Tuffy is back to normal. He's still wearing his heartbars and probably will through one more shoeing rotation.

The filly is just as sweet as she can be. She was a little wired yesterday and when I was doing her leading, stopping and standing still lessons, I was wishing I'd have made her to a few laps in the round pen before I got started. She's gonna do some laps first today.

Oh, thanks for the compliment on the tagline. I stole that from somewhere on the internet but I can't remember what site it was.

I've never done dressage very officially, but I've watched a lot of it, and read. I had a good friend who I watched train and show in it, and she gave me some lessons. Do you think your instructor will let you ride some official tests and show in it? Or are you interested in that?

Thanks for the kind words. I wish you lived closer too. I love teaching people to ride better because their horses always get better when the riders get better.

And, I am happy that you were able to pass on what I was able to teach you to your daughter. That is what dressage is all about. Teacher to student who becomes teacher to someone else.

Unfortunately, my mentor is in Oregon so I don't get to ride with him very much. I am trying to get him in the area for some clinics in 2006. He spent 7 years apprenticing at Egon Von Neindorff's place in Germany and his own mentor/teacher is a former chief rider from the SRS, Karl Milkolka. Karl came to the US many years ago to train at Tempel Farms and stayed because he loved the US so much.

What is REALLY cool is when Dr. Ritter teaches me techniques and methods that are straight from the SRS! I ride and teach strictly classical dressage. Much of what is seen in the competition arena is not classical dressage.

How is that young filly doing? It sure would be neat to see you in a few years riding dressage on her!!

Hi Shake, what part of Texas are you at? I am north of Houston and not happy that I could not go to the SRS show. I love those horses! I was learning dressage when I lived in California, but since I moved to Texas (2001) I haven't been able to get on a horse. I agree that Dressage is addicting.

Hey...whattaya think of them geysers, sis?

I think I wouldn't be too surprised if I felt the earth move. I just find it all fascinating!

Wouldn't surprise me, with all that has gone on with the Earth last couple of years (hurricanes, tsunamis) if Oklahoma split right down the middle! I really bet I'd just say "Well...now there's that."

I live just north of Dallas in the shadow of SouthFork Ranch. There are some good dressage instructors in the Houston area, and the Houston Dressage Society is quite large and active. You should get involved again! Before I bought Jake (was horseless), I volunteered at all the DDS shows and enjoyed dressage from a different perspective. Now when I show, I am too busy with my horses to help out much at the shows. But, it is fun. You learn a lot by helping out behind the scenes. The hardest thing to get volunteers for is setting up and tearing down the arenas. Probably the best volunteer job is as a scribe. You really can learn a lot about how tests are judged, and you get to know some of the judges.

I was just in Houston on Sunday for the SRS performance. I have also shown in Katy at Regionals (Great Southwest arena).

I am so bummed today because the weather is going to be so nice, but I have to finish study for and take a final exam this afternoon. So, no riding for me today :(

Interesting about the gas guysers! You'd think somebody'd be out there drilling a well and making some money ASAP. I guess it goes to show you that you just never know what's right under your feet.

I think that my instructor will let me eventually. I haven't ridden any tests yet. I do want to show, but she doesn't push you too, which is great. I have mixed feelings about showing... I want to learn the tests and the movements, but I don't care to measure myself up to anyone else. All that I care about is that I know how to do it, and to it properly. I would want to show to get a "progress report" to see what I need to work on. Make sense?

That is exactly the right attitude. So many make the mistake of riding the movements because they are required for a specific test. Instead, the "movements" are actually exercises to strengthen and gymnasticize the horse. They are the means to the end, not the end themselves.

You are ready to ride tests when you can ride through the test at home without stress, and everything asked in the test is easy for you and your horse to do. The test is exactly what its name implies: it is a test of the training of the horse at a certain point in the dressage continuum.

There are 4 basic dividing lines:

1. basic training for the young horse (Training level-1st Level)
2. campaign level for the older horse (Second-Third Level)
3. Haute Ecole (4th and above)
4. Airs above the ground (not shown in competition)

When are you gonna take mom riding? I mentioned wagon once and she is asking about it constantly. We had ice here last week. They went to the park in the jeep to do donuts on the ice.
