This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well the dog did it several times. Once the thing started showing at the butt end, they had to help.
I've learned when JP is here to put diapers way down in the can where the dogs can't get them. They love em. I've heard, don't know if it's true, but the word "dog" comes from an Indian word that means "Poop eater" Indians kept dogs around their camps to keep the camps clean. Don't know if that's true, but I've heard it.

I didn't stay out there long enough to see. I'll run out in a bit to see if they are eating it.
I didn't make it real soupy. If they eat this then tomorrow I'll try making it more soupy. It was warm tho, there was steam coming out of the buckets.
Becky
Oh that's really gross, on both counts ;~D
And I believe it, on both counts ;~D
I bet they liked it.
We like to pamper them with that when it's really cold... I know I think it's nice to have something warm in the tummy after being cold :~D

My favorite :)
Wow! Is it any good? :~D
I haven't read that book but I have read others by the same author. She is a good mystery writer :)
I'll look for it :~D
I haven't read in a long time... still sitting on this book Becky recommended a year ago...
I FReep too much... and watch TV too much of the rest of the time.
I'm online a good bit but I don't watch much TV. An unmentioned part of my job is reading, I'm the reader's advisor more or less for fiction. I do read authors that sound interesting and try to stay on top of a lot of the new books out by favorite authors. Then patrons are always recommending books they think I should read or good authors. :)
I used to read! Now I just stare at the screen
- speaking of staring at the screen... we've got South Park on now :~D
Good night :~D
Hair, I tried to use your name when I created a new PVP character on my Guild Wars game. It was taken. The little monsters are so sweet. The man who picked up the kitty called and left a message yesterday. He was hard to understand, but from what I got, the kitty is doing fine. The broken back leg had healed already, and they were just going to leave it as is.
I'm always bummed when my name is taken already :~D I've been HairOfTheDog at a few places! - but not there, that one's not me.
Good news about the kitty, I bet she'll be fine with the crooked leg... adds character :~D
Ooooo Becky, I like your lights out in the back yard! I'm jealous of your snow. We're not gonna get any. It didn't even get out of the 40s last night and will be that warm today too so we'll just get rain. Yuck!
Thanks, but that's my front yard:)
I wish I could send you this snow that you are jealous of. It is very very cold, and the snow is more like sand. We didn't really get much, not even and inch.
Becky
Same here. We don't have any snow equipment to speak of. The county road dept will get out their trucks with loads of sand and salt, but it has to be spread by hand, and you can forget a snow plow. People don't know how to drive in it either and you'll see somebody off in the ditch about every 100 yards. Everybody runs to the store at the slightest hint of snow to buy milk, bread and toilet paper. I could never figure that out. What ever you can make out of milk, bread and toilet paper must be pretty darned good! ;o)
Our standard emergency response is to run out and buy milk and bread and toilet paper, no matter what the crisis... It's our most basic survival instinct I think. :~D
Heh.. we often get a hard time when it snows, all kinds of jokes about how we can't drive in the snow either... and there is a lot of that. There's a lot of people who only get about two days a year to ever learn how. But I always defend this region too, from the folks from the upper midwest who joke about Tacoma and Seattle coming to a halt when it snows. It's true they don't have a lot of equipment, but even if they did, those two cities are built on about a 30 degree slope, with intersections at the bottom of every hill and at various points on it. It's a nightmare in just a little snow ;~D
So I scoff at my friend from Chicago who laughs at us... I say - you don't have hills in Chicago! How hard could it be to get around? :~D
Well, without the barn up, the horses are probably best off with it that cold - better than they would be if it was just barely freezing and they were wet. They do pretty well in bitter cold as long as they're dry.
The only time I ever saw mine get in real trouble with cold was when we had a lot of snow on the ground followed by rain and freezing rain and it was about 33 degrees. The horses that year only had the lean-to, and with branches snapping everywhere from the ice, they were too spooked to stay in the lean to and stood outside where they got soaked. That year, Bay had a blanket and was fine, but I didn't have one for the pony, I figured she'd do fine without one (which usually she could have) But she got wet to the skin and got very nearly hypothermic. She was standing and shaking, head down, lethargic. I went out and took towels and big comforters off the bed and covered her head to toe and stood there in the lean to holding her in there with a big comforter over her. It was a pretty miserable night, but she needed it, I think she was in serious trouble otherwise.
The horses do seem fine this morning. Harley has a blanket on, Rocky at least has walls to block some wind. They ate their pellets last night. I just gave them dry ones this morning. And a warm bucket of water. If they drink that, I'll give them some hay in a bit.
Becky
