The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Logan got in a deer skin and ate enough hair and hide or something that it plugged him up BUT GOOD. He had to go to the vets and, after xrays to determine he hadn't eaten anything sharp and pointy, he got the power enema they hook up to the long hose and the bathtub :~D

Yep, it does mean more work. I'm trying to decide if I should go throw the horses some more hay. Poor things don't have alot of shelter right now. But, I'll feed them their pellets around 9. My biggest concern of loading them up on hay now tho, is I'm not sure how well they are drinking. I've been hauling them water, but it freezes so fast, I don't know how much they drink. I'm afraid feeding them alot of hay they are not use to might at the same time they may not be drinking well is risky. I gave them a little earlier, but I think I'll let that do them on hay for the night. Tomorrow while I'm home and it's so cold I can give them more and keep an eye on them, and take them water more often.

Your call on that... I know I worry too, about feeding them a lot of hay if they haven't had a lot of water, but I bet they are drinking what they need and would do fine with some hay to nibble in the night.

Pour some hot water on their pellets and make a mash... I bet they'll like it, it will help get water into them, and give them a warm tummy too :~D

Ours like a hot mash... I heat the water to boiling and pour plenty of water in it and let it sit. It'll absorb a lot of water, and I make it pretty soupy. By the time you let it sit a minute, and then take it out in the cold, it cools down to a safe, but still warm temperature.

I like the idea as just a way to get fluids in them, and also the pellets won't cause an impaction or a choke.

The two you have will probably eat it right up... it was Rusty who was pretty picky about changing his food, right?

I saw the photos of the mess your barn was and Mack has done a great job re-building it. Luckily ours is steel with a metal roof, and we only have damage on the roof. Deaconjim will get to it when the winds die down long enough and our neighbour can help.
I'm not getting on any roof! :)

When the high winds had calmed down and everything that was moving around the yard had stopped, I looked out and the chickens were all huddled on the table on the back porch! :) I guess it was sheltered there, or there were enough left from the last storm, that remembered losing their house to the next field!
Your lights look really pretty. I don't normally do outside lights but I may get some to go on my two bushes either side of the steps to my front porch.

That's allright. :D What with Sally bringing me a present with the hoof still attached, the kittens on the back porch playing with a limp chipmunk, and your detailed description....I'm not so hungry anymore!

Oh - well in that case, I will say that the deer hairball was neither the last, nor the most disgusting thing, that ever came out of the butt end of my Labrador with the assistance of the power enema at the vets. It was just one of many obstructions, including but not limited to plastic baggies, rawhide treats, and a baby diaper. :~D

My nephew use to have some kind of bull dog. He use to swallow whole dirty socks. I heard discrpitions of the expelling process of them,,,,I just wonder how they even swallow that stuff.

I don't know how they'd get a whole sock down.

I tell ya, when I saw him eating the baby diaper, I was ~almost~ grossed out enough to shoot him on the spot :~\

OK, I fed the horses their pellets with hot water...now I'm worried. Was I suppose to give them the same amount wet as I do dry. They really swell alot. Will that hurt.

Sure - same amount, it only looks like more because of the water.

Did they like it? :~D
