This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well this trouble isn't our fault, the branch in town that we do business at wasn't even answering their phones yesterday....We've been considering switching banks for awhile, I think it's going to happen now, but that in itself is a headache, especially on businnes accts.
Years ago I made a mistake once in our checkbook. We banked with a local bank that advertised "being a small town bank who knew their customers". Anyway because of a subtraction mistake on my part, we had a some overdrawals that cost us alot in fees. I knew from other people in town that this bank "sometimes" gave good customer's a call if it looked like an accidental mistake had taken place. We didn't get a call altho we had been good customer and had quit a bit in savings there.
It really pissed me off, but we paid the fees and didn't complain, after all it was my fault. But a few weeks later they made a mistake. I marched in and demanded $20:). It took awhile but like I told them what's good for the goose is good for the gander. If they're going to charge me for mistakes, I'm chargeing them:). They just didn't have a defense for that, and finally gave me the $20.
It's so cold here, that I've been having to pour water in my bird bath several times a day. The birds stand on the ice and peck at it, so I've been trying to keep it thawed. I'm going to have to start hauling water from the house now too, for the horses.

I finished getting all my Christmas Decorations up this weekend and I sure am glad. Here's a pic of our tree. You can't tell much about it, but it gives you an idea...
This is my china cabinet. I've got a collection of crystal Christmas trees and angels and Santas. I lined the hutch part with mirrors and put them there every year with little white lights and crystal bead garland wrapped in there with them and I kinda like how it looks. You can't hardly tell one thing from another, but still you get the idea...
I'd like to see pics of everybody else's decorations if they're inclined to share.
They just didn't have a defense for that, and finally gave me the $20.
I'm really impressed that you pulled that off! I've had my moments with NSF fees too, I just hate it because it snowballs on ya so fast.
Beautiful tree and the little crystal things! We don't have an ounce of Christmas cheer up here yet. We don't usually put up a tree here, since we go up to the beach house for Christmas morning anyway, but I usually at least put some lights on one of my big house plants :~D
The beach house, we always decorate as a big family thing, and I think that's happening this weekend.
The crystal things look like icicles in a window. :~D
I sure hate having to do that. I used to have to do it at least once a winter where I used to live because the only water I had for the horses came from a hose run across the yard to the trough at the fence. I always tried to remember to drain the water out of it each time but I would invariably forget one time and it would freeze. On those days that it didn't get above freezing during the day and thaw it out I had to haul water to the trough in 5 gallon buckets. I used to just lug them out there by hand but two of those darned things weigh about 100 lbs, so I got me a little red wagon and started pulling them out there in that. It helped alot! I don't have to worry about it now. The mares at my MIL's place have a running creek to drink from and my BIL has one of those self-draining spigots that shuts off below the freeze line for the trough at his place. Now I just have to break the ice on it with a crowbar if it gets too thick. Much better situation.
On those cold mornings, we like to make our horses a hot mash, by pouring hot steaming water in their grain. If you pour it in the house, it usually cools enough by the time you get to the barn that it won't burn them. They sure like it when it's cold and frigid out :~D
Yeah, that's why I like 'em, they do look like ice. We go to my Mom's for Christmas morning too, and my in-law's that evening. We don't have any kids, but I guess we're still big kids ourselves coz we just have to have the Christmas tree and decorations. We hardly ever have any company, but the cats seem to enjoy it. ;o) We haven't had a repeat of the "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Pee" yet either, so I'm glad. But I have had to chase some of the lower ornaments across the floor. Cav's kitty just can't seem to resist, even though he knows it's gonna get him squirted, but most of the time he waits until he's "Home Alone". Smart kitty!
Heh... I hope you make it through the season without any 'oh Christmas pee' :~D
A friend of mine's Pomeranian ran into our house and immediately peed at the base of the tree one year. I'm the only one who saw it, and I didn't say anything, I knew she'd be mortified.
We were 25 overnight (about halfway between Dallas and Sherman). You and I are both under the same winter storm watch for Wednesday. That usually means that you get snow and we get ice.
At least the weather isn't keeping me from riding. I am too busy with end of semester studying for finals to even think about riding. This week and next week are completely taken up with school. After that, I have a few weeks off between semesters and plan on riding a lot!
Sounds like your barn rebuilding is progressing nicely! But on the bank problem, that is the pits. They can be so hard to deal with. My sister-in-law works at our bank so when I have problems, I just call her and she straightens everything out.
I'll post some pictures as soon as I do some decorating! I hope to get the tree up this weekend. I already put lights outside so will try to get a photo of them.
I love your crystal collection! What a beautiful display!
You know on single digit mornings I make the girls hot oatmeal...
Thanks! :o)
I'll look forward to the pics of your tree. It's hard to get good pics of a Christmas Tree because if you turn the flash on it's too bright and you can't see the lights, but if you don't it's almost too dark. I like sitting around with just the christmas lights on. It's seems like candle light and seems to give the room a nice mood.
Same thing :~D It's fun to pamper 'em a ~little~ huh!
Christmas lights make it impossible to be in a bad mood :~D
Yup.
This morning it was still double digit, though vey cold. They got a pan of warm water that I keep refreshing and a pan of corn (a carbohydrate that causes their metabolism to heat up.)
Nice looking tree! It looks like a really nice stash of presents under there too. I usually procrastinate and wait 'til the last minute to get everything wrapped so mine don't get to stay under there very long. Trees look much happier with lots of presents under them! ;o)
I love the way a fresh snowfall makes a place look, before there's any foot prints in it. So fresh and clean, especially at night. And it's always so quiet. I don't know if it muffles the sound or if it's just that there's hardly any traffic on the roads when it falls or what, but I love it.
Since the kids left, I don't decorate as much. I won't put my tree up till next week we have a few outside things up. Mack thought we need something out in the garden since we have grandkids:)
We've been out getting the boards back on the roof of the barn in preperation for the tin. It's rather difficult, but we are making progress. It won't be up for the snow we are expecting tomorrow, and that snow will halt progress, but I'd imagine they'll survive:). I have to run to town in the morning, I think I'll stop and pick up a bale of hay, just to give them something extra to generate heat.
And this is Susie, who is sure there is a mouse under the tin:), she has dug out quite a hole.
Becky
Maybe there ~is~ a mouse under that tin!
Good progress on the barn.... hope your weather doesn't turn too bad in the interim.
I got locked out of the house this morning by Gidget.... my honey had to come home from work at lunch to save me. :~\
