This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, my bird book shows their range covers the entire US and up into Canada and Alaska.
Becky
The power supply for the whole fence is right there, so I can't turn the fence back on till it's fixed. Needs done today. :~(
But beyond that.... winter wonderland pictures... the horses are still in the barn :~D
The wire stays tight, but the white electric tape we used on the top just sags like the loose rope barriers they use in the bank to make people form a polite line :~D They really do snap back up tight when it melts... mostly. There's some that I think will need to be tightened elsewhere.
This little pine tree in the back forty looked like a very pretty flocked Christmas tree this morning :~D
This is the area where I saw the coyote. It's all scotch broom that is laying down flat from the snow.
View from the pasture back to the house :~D
I'll have to do it myself. I made all of it myself, I had to do all the fencing here when I was a single chick. So I made this, I'll have to fix it, since ecurbh is at work.
I've been putting it off, but the mares are still cooped up in the barn, until they have a safe fence to put them in.
I'm headed out now to at least stare at the problem and figure out if I can fix it without having to go to town right now. :~D
Oh - the tall timber you see is all Douglas Fir. We have some Hemlock and some Western Red Cedar, but the predominant, tallest trees are all Douglas Fir.
Oh wow. That last picture is just beautiful. With the fence there it gives scale to the trees. They are so big. I love them.
Becky
I thought they might be fir trees but I wasn't gonna say it. All we've got around here is Southern Pine of various species. It makes great lumber but it ain't very pretty. There's a few hemlocks in the sheltered coves out in the Forest but I guess it just gets too hot for the others to do well.
Good luck on the fence!
I think I figured a way to get it get it fixed well enough for the day, I'm afraid I am hoping we can finish fixing it tomorrow when there are more sets of hands to operate the wire puller. (Hi honey ;~D bats eyelashes)
I gave the horses more hay in the barn. They want out, but they're gonna have to wait.
Honey, can you go to the feed store on the way home and get some "back side t-post insulators" made to go on the wrong side of the t-post? I just called, and they've got them. The little doohickeys I originally made to achieve that have failed and aren't worth the trouble. I'd like to replace all of them with good insulators when we tighten the fence tomorrow. We need 9 wires x 8 posts = 72 - they probably come 20 or 25 to a bag.
I hate doing anything in the cold:)
Becky
I.........gotta........go.......back........out......there.... :~D
Sure thing, hon. I wish things weren't so busy here, so I could take the afternoon off.
It's OK - I just need to put a power supply line back on it, and walk the fenceline again and tighten some of the tape. Then I will be all done :~D
except for the stalls...
EEEWWWWW:(, I'm sorry.
I have to go get JP and Blake. They are spending the evening with us. I bought one of those Gingerbread house kits for Blake and I to put together tonight. That should be fun:)
Stay warm, see you later.
Becky
Thanks, the horses have been in there since 4:30 yesterday, so I'm sure they're bad.
Have a good evening with the kids :~D
That last picture is so beautiful it looks fake.
Wow, that last picture looks like a painting. Very pretty. Good background for your Christmas photo. ;')
It would have been if it would last... :~D
Then I cleaned out my drainage ditch, for we all know that froms snow comes water :~(
Bay wondering if he can cross it. "I don't know, Bay, can you? Are you a seasoned trail horse or should I go get a show horse from town to lead the way across?" LOL
It's so pretty when the snow is still heavy on the trees... and the light is really blue in the early morning, it looks so cold :~D
It's mostly melted off the trees now... including a bucket full that fell on my head from above when I was clearing fenceline of branches :~D
They say we might get more tonight...
And with a mighty chewed up ear. Haven't looked at it very close yet, thought I'd let him eat, and rest a minute but he's gonna need a once-over to assess some kind of damage.
Thank you everyone, for your unsinkable optimism. I really assumed he was a goner.
But he sticks his tongue out at you all...
