This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
My dog makes a career of running over, picking them up, bringing them to the kitchen door, and barking until I open the door for her and the bird. We have a shoebox with cotton wool and a light bulb - we pop them in that to recover. Probably we save about 50 percent.
I wonder how they explain to their wives about the dried dog drool on their feathers . . .
Well, according to the forecasts, we are supposed to have a more substantial snow today.
Yeah - I've had about 50% luck too, with situations like that. The last one, I left in Bay's stall and it was later gone, so I figured it flew out :~D
North Georgia generally has a dusting of snow 2-3 times a winter, mostly in January and February. BUT . . . about every ten years the stars line up right and we get some serious snow . . . 6-8 inches of the heavy wet stuff. Snowjam '82 and the blizzard of '93 were our last serious storms, before that it was the winter of '72-'73 (when my husband to be had to come bring our family groceries with his car with snow tires on it!) so we are overdue by a year or so.
I would love to see some nice snow, because we are prepared (stocked up staples, gasoline, generator, 4WD truck) and there is a splendid sledding hill on a golf course near our house. My daughter was only 5 in '93 . . . now she's 17 and my son is 15 . . . they would have a blast screaming down this hill . . . we have a Flexible Flyer and a plastic sled stored in the rafters of the garage, just waiting . . .
I also want pictures of my Gracie mare in the snow!
Well, if you get snow, you'd better have your camera at the ready, I imagine it doesn't last long when you have it :~D
It doesn't usually last very long here, either. But we've had our moments where it sticks around for days. The last time that happened, the bummer of it was we were trying to get the horses trailered to a friend's house so we could go on a trip.

Hey, since you live in N. GA, have you ever been to the Chicamauga National Battlefield just outside of Chattanooga and rode the horse trails there? Some riding buddies and I went once a couple of years ago and it was pretty nice. They've only got 10 or 11 miles of trails, but it's pretty interesting to look at all the monuments and read the plaques along the way detailing what parts of the battle happened where and when.
I'm trying to persuade our trainer to run a trailer up for the day. I think we can do it if we start early and still have plenty of time to ride.
We have a strong Chickamauga connection, as two of my gg grandfathers fought in the battle. One was just a buck private, but the other commanded the battery that chased General Thomas up Snodgrass Hill . . . Capt. S.H. Dent, Dent's Battery, Deas's Brigade. There are 3-4 markers on the west side of the battlefield for his unit. He got to write them himself, because it was one of the first battlefield parks, and surviving veterans who figured in the main action of the day were invited to "write their own markers".
I've had alot of birds hitting the door, but only that one got knocked out. I hope it doesn't happen often, or I'll have to move the feeders, and I really enjoy watching the birds in the morning.
We are getting lots of sunshine today so far, but it is very cold. The wind. It's suppose to reach mid 40's but will probably still be pretty cold:(.

My big ole Tom went out last night and hasn't come home yet. I don't like him out at night, but if he does stay out, he's usually waiting to come in when I get up. I've walked around calling, but no sign of him. I hope he didn't get eaten.
Heh.... those old guys just keep going!

Wow, that's cool about your GGfathers! I've got no idea about any of my kin that far back.
I didn't know they rented horses at Chicamauga. I've never ridden one, but I imagine that they're pretty bad, considering all the abuse they take at the hands of most inexperienced riders. You were probably a bright spot in that horse's life that day. She probably thought "At LAST, a rider who knows how to communicate!". It amazes me how perceptive horses can be when different riders mount up. My cousin had an old gelding that his youngest kids could ride with ease but when he got on the horse was just as spirited and lively as any young horse could be.
LOL! I was just thinking that he looked pretty good for a dead guy!
Cadaver? Heck, I've seen better looking 3,000 year old mummies . . . sheesh!
But it's amazing how horses can "know" about the riders on their backs (although I guess it makes sense, really). My mare is a different animal when I climb on her back - she is "Miss Reliable" when my trainer has an adult beginner who's too big for her ponies or smaller beginner horses - but last week she was bucking and snorting because she hadn't been out all the rainy weekend. She even made a spirited try at running away with me down a big outside line, I had quite a time getting her stopped. I made her go back and TROT the big ones - and she tried to run away with me again! We had a little come-to-Jesus meeting in the corner of the ring, and I think we got it all out of her system!
